A Strange Person I Know
| | | | A Strange Person I know | | I have a strange neighbour whom I meet only in the evenings when she comes home from work. I find her odd because of what she wears every day to work - a frilly and feathery purple hat! It did not matter what clothes she wore on that day or if the colour of her clothes matched her hat because she would still wear it, rain or shine. When I first saw her, I could not help laughing rudely because the purple hat lookedridiculous on her head. My friends and I would tease her behind her back and crack the most offensive jokes about her. Luckily, she never came to know about those awful jokes or my friends and I would have had a lot of explaining to do then. However, as the months passed, I came to know her through our evening meetings. She was a surprisingly kind and sincere person. I felt sorry for talking behind her back. After several meetings with her, I found the courage to ask her why she always wore her hat. She told me that her grandmother had worn that very same hat thirty years ago. She wore it because it reminded her of her grandmother.I was more than surprised by her answer because I realised what a treasure that hat must be to her. So she was not so strange a person after all since I too have some treasured things which I refuse to let go of, even when they look ridiculous and silly. | | | | rain and shine | | in any kind of weather | | | | ridiculous | | funny | | | |

Whilst working a shift in a residential home, I became acquainted with an elderly lady in her eighties. She had been a widow for many years and had no children. She was a very quiet, private person, who didn’t like showing her feelings, being made a fuss off or being hugged. She had lived in the home for about five years. The only visitor that Mrs B had was an elderly man, a friend of her husband. He would come and visit every Monday and have afternoon tea with her. They would reminisce and Mrs B looked forward to his visits. One Monday the elderly gentleman did not arrive and Mrs B thought it was unusual. The following day we had a message that the elderly man had been found dead at home. I was asked to tell Mrs B.…

Driving down Highway one on a weekend vacation, my wife and I arrive at a little town by the name of Carmel. We decide to stop and drive around this beautiful town. We stop at the beach for a while and enjoy the beautiful day. After enjoying the day we leave the beach and drive a different way than when we came in to the town earlier that day; we get lost. As we are trying to get back to Highway one we turn on Rio Road and come onto one of the most beautiful buildings we have ever seen. We decided to get off and look inside; since we saw a parking lot and a couple of cars parked in the parking lot. When we went inside we found out that the beautiful place we were…

In the summer of 2000, the president of the Historical Society came to my office and told me that they were having trouble insuring the Pantry because the Society didn't own it. She told me I should either give the Pantry to the Society or take it out of the Clark House where it was housed. In addition, she said that of the three people who knew the Pantry was on loan from me, two had Alzheimer’s and she had a terminal illness. After a few days, I went to the Clark House and took the Pantry to my office. At the office, it was quite the conversation piece but also I couldn't keep little kids from trying to play with it. I couldn't blame them as I had done the same thing in my…

At Claire’s Accessories, I decided that I would ask people if I could buy something they were wearing. Claire’s Accessories, like the rest of the mall, was nearly deserted, but I did find the perfect opportunity and took it. I approached a lady, she looked like she mas maybe in her middle 50’s or so, and commented on how pretty I thought her earrings were. She instinctively reached up to feel them to figure out which pair she was wearing. Before I even had the chance to ask her where she bought them, she began to ramble on about the various stores where she buys her jewelry. Finally, she came to the conclusion that it was either Sears or JCPenny. She then asked me if I’d seen the earrings they had on display at Claire’s Accessories. I chuckled and then surprised her by asking if I could buy the ones she was wearing. Immediately she began to laugh hysterically. She turned around walk outside the store because she was laughing so hard. Then she walked back in and asked me if I was joking. I…

The next day I was getting ready to leave for class when she walked in the backdoor. She had brought home a few groceries so I helped her carry them up the stairs. It was then I began to ask her about her day at work. She first began to tell me how she had a rough day because some of her co workers came in late. She wasn’t in the best mood but I still kept inching closer. After about thirty seconds she gave a confused look and awkwardly began backing up. I couldn’t help but to laugh at the look she gave me. I started explaining that it was an experiment for my sociology class and it wasn’t until then that she found humor in the situation. We laughed together for a few seconds and she asked me why did I choose her? I told her that I knew she would give the most honest response.…

An old couple lives in my neighborhood who cannot read and write, and they often come to me for assistance with their bills and letters. One day, I was walking by their house and they invited me in. They served tea and cookies, but I hesitated to eat those cookies as it looked strange. When I asked them what kind of cookies are these, the women replied “I don’t know about the type, but we always buy it by looking at the picture and color of wrapper”. When I asked them to show me the package, it turned out to be cookies for Dog’s. They were so embarrassed to know that they have been serving…

It was my birthday. I was presented many colourful and expensive gifts. But my best friend did not give me a gift like that. She gave me a small blue box and said that: “This is my special gift for you. I hope you will like it.” I was very curious about what was in the box. I opened it. It was a scarf! But it was not colourful, it was blue and white which were my favourite colours. It was not a normal scarf which was bought from the shop but it was made by my friend. She bought many balls of wool and learned how to knit. She tried her best to make a special gift for me. I knew that she had had much ado and time to finish kniting the scarf . Although it was not beautiful, I was happy and promise her treasure it. However, it was also the last gift from my best friend. Two months later, she had to move to another country with her family. I was very upset when I knew that.…

The old man shuffled into the coffee shop and ordered his normal cup of coffee without sugar and many times, I would see him looking longingly at the delicious pastries which adorned the shelves. So, I would purchase two doughnuts and a pie for him to eat during the day and also give him another cup of coffee to take with him as well. The man’s eyes would always light up with gratitude and as he smiled, one could see the coffee stained teeth which seemed as though it was never cleaned and as he passed by, one could get the smell of garbage implying that this man lived and slept on the sidewalks. As he shuffled outside again, all the patrons turned to look at him, regarding him as a disgusting, bothersome fly. My kindness extended to the man as I made it my duty to collect old clothing which the neighbours in my street wished to discard and I would give it to the old man when he came into the store. My fellow co-workers questioned my actions and I would just consider it as a kind deed to an unfortunate human.…
