A Crab Story
A Crab Story
This is a story about crabs, with a very simple lesson for you and me. It is said that many many years ago, the animals that lived near the water noticed something strange about the crabs, “the crabs walk sideways,” Said the frogs.”Poor crabs!” they cried out. “They don’t know how to walk straight.” “It’s not good when you can’t walk straight,” the turtles added. “That’s why these crabs keep bumping into things.” The animals had a long discussion. Finally, they decided to hold a class every Sunday to teach crabs to walk straight. Sunday came, and the crabs came to class eager to learn. The crabs listened well to their teachers. Before the class ended, the crabs could walk as straight as all the other animals. Not only that, the crabs together learned how to march in line following the commands of the teacher. The crabs promised to return to class next Sunday. And each crab went back home---walking straight. When the next Sunday came, the crabs returned. But … they came to class walking sideways!
The frogs, the turtles, and the other animals were disappointed. It meant the crabs would have to learn all over again. So they taught the crabs would have to learn all over again. So they taught the crabs once more how to walk straight. The crabs listened eagerly, carefully obeying the steps their teachers taught them. They marched and did drills again. Then each crab went home, walking straight as could be. The third Sunday the crabs returned, and there they were---walking sideways once more! This went on for many Sundays. Every Sunday the animals were happy, and the crabs were happy as they went home walking straight. But when they came back, the crabs were sad, stumbling and walking sideways again. One Sunday after class, the frogs decided to follow the crabs as they walked straight back to their homes. All week the frogs secretly followed the crabs around. Then the frogs called a meeting to talk with the other animals about what they found out. It was

In his article David Foster Wallace proposes that the world’s largest lobster-eating celebration may actually be a massive animal-abusing process comparable to the cruelty to that of the Aztec’s human-sacrificing ritual. Wallace introduces Maine’s annual Marine Lobster Festival (MLF) held in late June attracts thousands of tourists seeking to devour the “steak meat” of the Atlantic Ocean – lobster. A lobster is a crustacean, existing in the region since colonial times with such abundance that early settlers condemned lobster meat as low-class. Presently, lobsters are considered a luxurious dish, which is a misconception Wallace thinks the MLF is trying to change. The chaotic dining area and meaninglessly-long lines attract few locals, but Wallace…

The invading Asian shore crab (Hemigrapsus sanguineus), has been a growing cause for concern for over a decade in Southeastern Massachusetts. It is suspected that the species was first introduced in the U.S. as adults or larvae present in ballast water discharged from incoming global trade ships. The first specimen in the U.S. was recorded in Townsend Inlet, Cape May County, NJ in 1988. The first appearance in Massachusetts was near Woods Hole on Cape Cod in 1992. By 1994, the Asian shore crab was identified in my hometown of Fairhaven, MA. As a precautionary measure, the ballast water of incoming international trade ships are monitored to prevent and eradicate new introductions of the species. Researchers are also conducting experiments to…

In the novel “High Tide in Tucson” the author, Barbara Kingsolver, uses a hermit crab to explain the importance of life. At the beginning of the chapter, the reader is introduced to the main characters, Buster and Barbara. Buster appeared in a new place when the reader was surprised to find the little hermit crap stumble our carton full of seashells Barbara had brought back from the Bahamas to give to her daughter back in Tucson, Arizona. Barbara, an animal behaviorist is very accepting at what life throws in the way “To walk upright, to protect my loved ones, to cooperate with my family—however broadly I care to define it – to do whatever will help us thrive” (Kingsolver 8). The description of this quote states the symbolism of how sometimes the environment of the reader may change unexpectedly causing the reader to rethink the situation. Buster was put in this situation. “We humans have to grant the presence of some past adaptations, even in their unforgivable extremes, if only to admit they are permanent rocks in the stream we’re obliged to navigate” (Kingsolver, 8), also states to help support the theory. Buster has to totally change its views to understand where it is and what it is supposed to do. Barbara tells the reader in the end of the article “She will roam light-years from the base of the tree” (Kingsolver 14). The reader will never know what will happen in ten years or the end of life. Kingsolver states again that the world is all in relation. Even small little creatures, like Buster, can cause a change in the readers view.…

When I first read the title of the story, my mind went in all directions as to what it could be about, besides the obvious, lobsters. Although, in the first few passages the author talks about how smelly the Main Lobster Festival is, how hot the weather was, how long the lines were, and discusses lobster biology in great detail; with this start to his article you think you are going to read only about this festival and what it all entails. Almost like it is an advertisement to get people to show up.…

Busybody thought everything was alright until something horrible happened. It was February 27th, no sign of Johnny Dorset. Mrs. Busybody could finally lie down and relax without being disturbed. Everything was starting to seem so peaceful, relaxing, and calm. She was slowly drifting off to sleep. Then, she heard someone yelling as loud as an elephant. Mrs. Busybody sat up to see the worst surprise ever. The terrible and mean Johnny Dorset has come back. She got ran around the house faster than a cheetah. Awe Man! , “I thought I would never see him again”, she said. “Lord, why me? Is this punishment for popping Johnny’s little, red ball or breaking all his sticks so he wouldn’t be able to play that Indian game”, she thought. Whichever one it was please forgive me. All of sudden, a thought struck her head. “I can leave for a few days”. Mrs. Busybody quickly ran to my dresser and pulled out a week’s worth of clothes. What about my two cats’? , she thought. “I’ll just leave them here”. “My cats are missing limbs and ears and they’re beaten up. If they weren’t in such poor condition, I would gladly them with me”. But, Johnny decided he wanted to throw medium sized rocks at them. Poor cats, they haven’t been the same since then. She finished getting her items together. Mrs. Busybody walked outside to the old, raggedy, blue car in the drive way. She started driving and the car started making funny noises. The dusty, slow car broke down in front of a big cabin. This is better than nothing. “At least I’m away from Johnny”, she said with a stupid grin on her…

”Do Lobsters Go to Heaven” is a short story about the boy, Ethan, who goes shopping at the supermarket, with his mother. I have chosen to focus a lot on Ethan’s personal development throughout the story. He does many different things to seem more grown up. In the beginning of the story, Ethan is presented as a young and childish boy. He wants to do everything on his own, but he is just a child and needs a lot of help. But as the story progresses, he becomes much more independent. Ethan wants to handle everything on his own, but he discovers that that might not always be as easy as he thinks. And as Ethan changes, it seems like his mother does not want him to change, or at least, she has to get used to that he gets older.…
