Zoology Personal Statement
I have always wanted to work with animals for a career. I read a book called “Born Free” by Joy Adamson. This book is about a family who took care of a lion since it was a cub and how they released the lion back into the wild when it was ready to fend for itself. Then, a few years later the family went back and visited where they released the lion, the lion actually noticed them and came to see them. Throughout this book, you could say that the lion, the family, and the reader were all rescued. Lions have been my favorite animal since as long as I can remember. How cool would that be to have a relationship like that with a lion? Or any other animal for that matter? I’ve seen videos of people caring for animals and animals caring for people …show more content…
Zoology is the research/study of animals. Many people think zoology is just someone who works in a zoo but it’s not. Zoology is actually a lot more than that. The opportunity to be able to work in a zoo would be a fun and a good experience. I would get the chance to interact with the animals close up, you’d be able to share knowledge on the animals but that's not my main goal. My goal is to work with animals in their natural habitats. I have always wanted to travel the world and research animals in their own space. This scholarship will be able to help me accomplish my goal of becoming a zoologist because it will allow me to travel and conduct research outside of the college atmosphere. If I were to travel for one of my classes, this scholarship would help with those expenses. I have always had a strong love and desire to work with animals ever since I was little. In my life, my family has had a variety of different animals that we have cared for, so I have had some experience with handling animals like livestock. Obviously, those aren’t jungle animals or anything, but it has given me a sense of responsibility for animals of all sorts. To somewhat prepare for zoology, I have based my classes on my field of study. I plan on going to further my education at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville to major in zoology. I not only have a passion to take care of the animals but also to study their anatomy and behavior. This scholarship could put me

Did you know there’s more than one word with ‘zoo’ in it? Zoo is typically thought of to be an exhibit of animals for public viewing, but it’s also a prefix in words like, ‘zoophobia’ and, ‘zoonomy’. There’s many others, but the focus here is ‘zoology’. I was introduced to the field I am interested in from my 9th grade biology class. Prior to the course, I had never taken biology or any science, for that matter, that had captured my attention such as this year-long experience. I was intrigued by the subject and fascinated with all the advances in society that have been made by scientists throughout the years. The possibility of being able to do this in the future kept me engaged and I further pursued this interest by currently taking AP Biology. In addition, I was inspired by the change that scientists can make through research and…

A personal experience that sparked my interest in the pursuit of a veterinary science degree was when I was eight years old. My mother brought home a small injured puppy that she found abandoned on the side of a busy street. I remember how scared he was, and how very fragile he seemed. She tried to make him as comfortable as possible until we could get him to the veterinary office the following day. He slept in a box, padded with blankets, next to my mom's bed. He would cry each time he moved. I slept in my mom's bed that night so that I could be close to him.…

I'm passionate about science, specifically the science that revolves around how our planet works. I live in an area that is a geological hot spot, I’m only miles away from Crater Lake and I live near the Cascadia Subduction Zone. I began to learn that earthquakes and natural disasters were a phenomenon that I wanted to learn more about. So I challenged myself by taking 4 and half years worth of science credits. My junior year I took Chemistry and Physics, and my senior year I continued building credit by taking AP Environmental Science. Each year I strived to earn good grades so that I could have an opportunity to continue my education. I want to earn a bachelor's degree in Earth Science and continue on to an advanced degree. My career goal…

4.For any industry to even consider employing you you have to have a bachelor’s degree and have to have completed high school with some sort of biology class credits. The more experience you have the easier it will be to find an employer willing to hire, though in order to perform field investigations on your own you would need to have a Masters degree and several years of experience. That would be your best chance at gaining employment, but in order to do higher level investigations or to perform my own lab work you would need to have a Ph. D(Bureau). There are some classes available at Durant High School that would benefit me greatly in the future, such as anatomy, biology and even computer technology classes. Even wildlife biologist do a lot of computer work for graphs, charts and keeping tabs on all habitats you are investigating. 6. With that said you also need to have reliable outdoor skills, wildlife biologist often must be moved to isolated locations to do their studies and you must be able to provide for yourself and operate some kinds of machinery(Bureau). All of these skills will take time to develop but they will give you a much greater chance of achieving the career that you want and I am more than willing to meet all these requirements for my future…

The education I would require in order to become a veterinary technician would be six years in total, two years to get my associate’s degree and enroll in a four-year bachelor’s degree program for animal science or pre-veterinary studies. Practical experience in a vet hospital is often part of the curriculum in a associate’s degree program. An externship can also be finished while a student is on their last semester of an associate’s degree program or during the summer. Externs assist vets by taking blood samples, weighing the patient, and sterilizing surgical tools. PIMA Community College, Mesa College, Miami Dade College, Hillsborough Community College, St. George’s University, Michigan State University, and Purdue University all offer the proper training. The skills that are required for this occupation are technical skills (x-rays, cleaning equipment and enter data into computers using spreadsheet programs), physical stamina, detail oriented, empathy and communication. You can gain experience through programs, volunteering at an animal clinic or hospital, shelter, etc. I am very creative, positive, patient, meticulous, caring, understanding, and I love all animals. In San Diego, California the annual salary for veterinary technicians is $32,000. The wage I would expect after years of experience would be $14.50, hourly pay. A veterinary technician associate’s degree costs up to $1,300 for in-state tuition, and a bachelor’s degree typically costs up to $60,000. Benefits for veterinary technicians include health and dental insurance, 2-4 weeks of paid vacation, paid sick leave, opportunities to travel (seminars, networking, etc) and most apply you with retirement. A day in the life of a veterinary technician is getting to work closely with the…

When you think of lions, you probably think of them being king of the savannah, right? However, it’s not easy being king. Over the past 50 years Africa’s lion population has plummeted from over 200,000 individuals back in the 1960′s to fewer than 25,000 today. A shocking number if you consider the size of that continent, and by far the greatest number of remaining lion populations are small, scattered, and highly vulnerable. Ghana, Coted’Ivoire, and Congo are the latest African countries added to long list that have lost all their lions, and Nigeria, Kenya and Uganda predict local extinctions in the next ten years. The population of the African Lion is decreasing because of trophy hunting and habitat destruction. However, you can help save the African Lion.…
