“They have deserved the fiery pit, and are already sentenced to it; and God is dreadfully provoked...”(Edwards 79). Jonathon Edwards uses many rhetorical devices such as imagery, metaphor, and tone/diction which effectively explains God's wrath towards the people. Edwards purpose was to create scare tactics so that the sinners will confess and convert immediately. He was very effective in proving his purpose while exaggerating the uses of tone and diction. Jonathon Edward's Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God proves that everyone is condemned to an eternity in hell and only the only way to be saved is by confessing their sins and acknowledging Christ as the only savior.

    In “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” Edwards states that “Unconverted men walk over the pit of hell on a rotten covering...God has so many different unsearchable ways of taking wicked men out of this world and sending them to hell...God had need to be at the expense of a miracle, or go out of ordinary course of his providence, to destroy any wicked man, at any moment” (124-129).
