The nice thing about poetry is that it can mean whatever you want it to mean and that meaning can fit with anything that is going on in your day to day life. The poet that I have chosen is Rickey Laurentiis, he is twenty-seven years old and was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. After looking through his poems the one that stood out to me the most was “You Are Not Christ”, not because of the name but because of the meaning. This poem also questions your beliefs by the title, whether or not you think this poem is about Christ or not. The speaker of this poem isn't really identified it just comes off as the author. There is only one speaker and he writes in first person. By the title this poem draws more of a religious audience, and the curious mind. I say the curious mind because I have no interest in reading religious poems but out of curiosity I decided to take a read and actually enjoyed it. The dramatized conflict in this poem is that people tend to fight there natural instinct when they just need to let it be and how it is resolved is by comparing it to something in real life to help people understand clearly. The poem really doesn't have any setting, time or place. I believe it’s more of just the poet giving advice to the reader. The speakers motivation for this poem was Hurricane Katrina.
