Writing Reflection

Sometime between preschool to fourth grade, I discovered that writing was difficult. I began learning how to sound out words while struggling to portray my thoughts through writing. Instead of trying to improve my writing, I squeezed by, one essay at a time. Now that I am in college, I have to realize my strengths and corrected my weaknesses in the writing process. Like everyone in this world, I have strengths and weaknesses. Unfortunately, I have little strength when writing. When I sit down to start an essay I normally do not feel overwhelmed. I sit myself down and begin listing and freewriting. Basically, writing down every thought, even if the thought has no relationship to the prompt. I try to be organized but my writing doesn’t always come out that way.
I struggle to articulate my thoughts onto paper while staying on topic. Tons of thoughts shoot through my mind causing me to jump from topic to topic or from interest to interest. My essays are written how I speak day-to-day. However, I don’t use proper English every day in verbal communication. I also leave information out of my writing. Maybe I assume everyone has telepathic abilities. When I use an outline, I tend to stay more on topic but that doesn’t help with paragraph breaks. I struggle with knowing when and where to begin and end a new paragraph. Paragraphs break between topics are challenging since I am unable to distinguish when an idea begins and ends.
Communicating my thoughts through writing is an issue. I believe my inability to properly communicate my thoughts began with being unable to spell. When I was younger, I would replace an exemplarily word with an elementary level word. When I get stuck on a word, I will look up a similar word in a thesaurus and find a word that appropriately describes my thoughts. Computers have spell check and a thesaurus so I no longer have to use a book. Microsoft Word attempts to assist with spelling, as well as, grammar and punctuation. My grammar and punctuation, in my opinion, is less than desirable. I misuse commas like crazy in my writing. Everywhere I would take a breath while speaking the sentence out loud I put a comma. Additionally, whenever I want to combine two sentences I use a semicolon when I should just use a period. Sometimes those two adjoining sentences are run-ons. I missed many English lessons in writing due to the lack of caring or attention. My essays are extremely boring; I have difficulty capturing my audience’s attention because I have no voice portrayed through my writing. I have never learned how to put myself into my writing. Ultimately in my opinion, I lack self-confidence and hide behind my writing. I guarantee the absence of my confidence has been preventing my growth all along. I have consistently struggled with writing, which causes it to not be enjoyable. Thankfully, instead of giving up, I use outlines to help get me through. Understanding my flaws has helped me put guidelines in place. When beginning an essay, I read the essay prompt. Then I list all the questions and concerns, along with constructive ideas and extra word vomit. If I get stuck, I look the subject up; find some facts, and doing that usually gets my thoughts flowing again. From there, I organize my thoughts. Once I have my categories, I type the outline. I start off with my intro at the top of my paper; then list the categories below, followed by the word by my conclusion. Next, I type out my main discussion points and incorporate them into body paragraphs. Once I have all my body paragraphs, I begin writing my introduction followed by my conclusion. I usually read my essay thoroughly the first time, then allow a family member to proof read it. The writing process has many rewrites. It’s uncomfortable for people to see my flaws. For example, I have very many grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors, as well as the possibility of losing my audiences interest. Outside opinions help to understand how my writing can improve while complimenting my work. Having the objective feedback helps me make sure my topic is maintained throughout the essay. I know where I need additional support but that doesn’t always mean I know how to correct it, plus a second opinion always helps. Although there will be speed bumps throughout my college years, I hope to come out a whole new person. From my writing class, I can only improve my writing skills. In the past, I have always been pushed to write my knowledge away. Therefore, I really need to open myself up and pay attention to my professor, peers, and feedback. I am hoping by the end of this semester, to turn my weaknesses into my strengths.

My writing process all depends on what I am writing. Some writings I can sit down and write the whole things and be done with it, while others can take me multiple days or even weeks. I normally sit down and work on it until I finish, get tired of it, or a hit a roadblock. I try to stop when I feel like I am writing the same thing over and over or if I feel like I just need a break. Most of the time, if I feel like I am writing and it is really bad, it is because it is and I need to take a break and come back to it later. Working on it in pieces normally works well for me, to break it up and take it a little bit at a time. I normally struggle when I do not like what I am writing about or when I run out of information to put in my writing. I…

Mike Rose brings all the chapters of this book together by not just researching how writers write, produce, plan, revise, etc.; but instead he is asking what physically and mentally keeps a writer for be unable to write the next sentence. He said that the “writer’s block” could be due to “anxiety, fear of evaluation, insecurity, etc.; he decided to dig deeper and come up with the best reasoning. He came to find out that the five students he studied who experienced writer’s block were all using rules and/or planning strategies that had been embedded into their heads that may not be compatible with their composing process, therefore hindering their writing rather than improving it. This relates to my question because there really are aspects to writing that we have been told are helpful but may actually keep us from excelling. Rose states that sometimes less is more. Students…

Writing was extremely difficult for me when I was younger, mainly because the great ideas I had in my head would not sound so great when I wrote them down on paper. It would sound so perfect to me, yet didn’t make any sense to someone else. Also, I dislike writing for the simple fact that there are a lot of rules to it. Throughout my high school years, I was a poor writer, and it came to my attention in my English 1101 class last year. I failed it the first time, because of not knowing how to get my thoughts to come together without them being all over the place. Retaking that course has really helped me get more focused on my writing skills.…

One of the difficult things to accomplish in writing is usually overcoming writer’s block. From the moment when I first started writing as a child, my main problem always seemed to be writer’s block. Though, it not always easy or works according to plan, it still allows me to perform to the best of my skills. Overall when writing a paper, my first priority is to get the thoughts from my head into the paper. I am very structured and organized when writing my essays. Instead of starting with a thesis, I write from the very beginning to the end. This writing process only causes issues when I am writing a paragraph and I start thinking and having ideas for another different paragraph. To fix this issue, when I start drifting off topic I plot down as much of the ideas I can in a separate paragraph and come back to it later. I generally do not write outlines, but write a complete rough draft first. Because of this, I usually write more than I need to, and must then cut out unnecessary sentences from my papers. After writing many papers this semester, I learned the best approach for me to tackle any…

When walking into my first period class as high schooler, I pictured myself as a well-rounded writer. My impression suddenly changed after a few weeks in Ms. Giroux’s class. As I received my first ECQ grade with a blood-inked C written in the corner, I realized I was going to have to put a lot more effort into my writing. I began to spend more time and put tedious details in my writing while doing deep revisions after my paper was complete. Towards the beginning of the year, my writing lacked creativity and organization skills.…

This issue kind of goes along with grammar, but I am usually really wordy when I’m writing. I think this is because when I’m thinking of what to write it sounds better in my head, but when I actually type it I go to fast and mess it up. If I slowed down while writing and re-read things, this would really help me with this issue. When I go back and look my papers over, I can find areas that I messed up the first time.…
