Tate learned that not everyone had the same skin. Some were white some were black. He always wondered what a big white man looked like. Tate’s family was in poverty so he did not have much to eat other than fish and rabbit also his education was poor. His dad worked in the mines down by the hills and did not make much money, but enough to feed the family. The year was 1845, Tate was 5 when his family went on a ship to the 13 colonies. Tate thought that if he followed the hill down, he would eventually get to the fence line where the creek was. Tate quickly filled up his water and tried to challenge himself to get back up. When he finally got there the sun was just barely rising a white kid was out brushing a beautiful black horse. Tate walked up to the boy and said “hello” the kid looked scared and backed up. Tate asked him why he was scared of him. He said “my dad said to stay away from black people like you”. Tate said “there's nothing to worry about I am no different from you”. The kid tried to look scared but Tate could tell he was trying not to be mean. The boy said he was the “boss's” son. Tate asked what his name was. “Ray” said the boy. What is your name Asked Ray? My name is Tate. Your dad is my owner. Ray said yes, don't worry about that. Ray and Tate went back to his host's house. Ray had brown hair and blue eyes The owner was eating breakfast when he noticed that they were talking. He got angry at Tate. Later that day the owner called Tate out while all the young adult slave were at work. He took me beside the barn and slapped me across the face with his glove, then again and again. Until the blood got into my eyes. He told me to never talk to my son again and left. Tates idea of running away was becoming a better and better idea. The only thing that stopped him was the thought a slave owner would catch him. If he got caught he would keep Tate and he would most likely get killed. He had an idea of going in the Underground Railroad but it was too risky. If he got caught there, he would die a painful

In is movie there was a man by the name of Solomon Northup who was a free slave born in New York. Solomon had a wife and two kids, and was also a great violin player.
