Write A Narrative On An American Race
I heard the gunshot, the race had begun I had a good start. I was in the top 30 and pushing top 20. This was not an ordinary race it had some 300 kids running in the race. I was nervous because of all the big teams there.

It was 11:00 a.m. 30 minutes till the race. Everyone was doing the warm up stretches as a team. I was nervous because of how many kids there were at the meet. The time till the race felt like forever because of all the big names there from all over the state.

It was time 2 minutes till we race we ran out and di our chant and got hyped up. We took our spots to start top 5 in the first row. “Runners on your mark!” Bang! Went the gun and we were off. I felt that I got a good start and was in the top 30.

By the middle of the race all the runners had separated out into different paced groups. I was still around the top 25 or 30 place mark. We hit the 1 mile mark 5.57 my coach yelled. I knew I had a good pace going.

It was time to kick it in and pass some people. I locked in on the people I wanted to pass and went for it. 1...2...3...4 people I passed and finished to place as 31st.

In the end I realized that I really was faster than I thought. I also learned that just because the big names are good at some sports that doesn't always mean they are good at other sports. This is what I learned from this really big Cross Country

I didn’t do that good but I finished and that’s all I cared about. As the season went on I had my doubts as of wether I could do it or not finish another meet go through another…

I set into motion some of the mental positivity I had practiced as I began passing people one by one. With a half a mile left, I found myself just outside of the top fifteen. My legs were burning and my lungs were screaming for oxygen, but slowly I began running faster until I was sprinting. I finished 14th with a time half a minute faster than I had ever run before. I became a member of the Southland’s all conference cross country team.…

I stood up and walked down the stairs to the court. The team and I went to the locker room like we always do at the end of the third quarter of the girl’s varsity game. Our opponent? The number one team in the state of Kansas, the Hanover Wildcats. With only two seniors, our team had a record that you don’t exactly brag about.…

It was an amazing time and i was imagining me in the hall of fame and being one of the best baseball players ever. We get back to our dorm and we find out we are going to face. It was the best team in California and they were projected to win the whole tournament. We were all so nervous and trying to focus. We ended up winning the game 5 to 4 with me hitting 2 homeruns. We were onto the championship game. It was view online by thousands of people and everybody was watching us. It was the most nervous I have even been for a game. A lot of people were watching us and everybody was trying to stay calm and act like nobody's watching. That calmed everybody down. It was the 7th inning and it was a tie game. We were up to bat against a pitcher that was throwing 80 miles per hour. Our lead off hitter got on base with a walk. The next hitter got hit by the pitch. He got a base hit and the bases were loaded with no outs. I was up to bat and I was very nervous and was thinking not to try too hard and try to get a hit. My coach called me over and said “ Don’t be nervous, it’s just like a normal at bat, you don’t need be overly anxious and try to be a hero.” That helped me out a lot, I was calm and was trying to do nothing special. I swing and miss at the first pitch. The second was a ball outside, it was a 1-1 count. The next pitch was a fastball right down the middle. I took my hardest swing I could and I hit the ball right on the…

The time in-between the moment we lined up to the time the gun went off, my palms were sweaty, my stomach was in knots, and my heart was beating at a million miles per hour. I was so nervous I felt like throwing up. Then, in a blink of an eye the gun went off and my mind went blank. It was like no one was around me even though there seemed to be a million people watching me run. However, I was running trying not to die. I could feel my legs beneath me more tired with each step. I could feel the ground push back at me with every step I took. During what seemed to be the longest two miles in my life, I remember coach Buse, my parents, high school runners, and other parents encouraging me during my first run. They said things like, “Keep going, you doing great!!!” and “Pump those arms, stride out!!” All the cheering was dancing around in my head, keeping me positive when I felt like dying. Then all of sudden, that was it, I finally reached the finish line, and I felt so proud of myself. I did it, I didn’t get last and I was surprised with myself. In that moment a huge weight got lifted of my shoulders, I felt relieved. That’s when I realized that running was as bad as I thought it was. I thought that maybe this would be my new favorite thing to do. I finished with the time of 16 minutes and 35 seconds. Which, as I see it, was a good time for being the first time I ran…

We got together and told us that even though we did not place as we would have liked to, we still accomplished so much that year. We ran as a team and had good showings at meets throughout the whole year. He told us that it is silly to say a season is a failure because of one bad race, because we had come so far from the beginning of the season. We grew as a team and had fun doing it, and that is something that we he told us to be proud of because not all high school teams could say that. Coach Ernst always knew the right thing to say to me to cheer me up and get me fired up and pushed me to my best. He also challenged me to think differently and be proud of my accomplishments even though they may not be what I expected them to…
