Aircraft were used for reconnaissance, as fighters, bombers and ground-support, and each role was advanced considerably. Innovation included airlift (the capability to quickly move limited high-priority supplies, equipment and personnel);[359] and of strategic bombing (the bombing of civilian areas to destroy industry and morale).[360] Anti-aircraft weaponry also advanced, including defences such as radar and surface-to-air artillery, such as the German 88 mm gun. The use of the jet aircraft was pioneered and, though late introduction meant it had little impact, it led to jets becoming standard in worldwide air forces.[361]

Advances were made in nearly every aspect of naval warfare, most notably with aircraft carriers and submarines. Although at the start of the war aeronautical warfare had relatively little success, actions at Taranto, Pearl Harbor, the South China Sea and the Coral Sea established the carrier as the dominant capital ship in place of the battleship.[362][363][364]

In the Atlantic, escort carriers proved to be a vital part of Allied convoys, increasing the effective protection radius and helping to close the Mid-Atlantic gap.[365] Carriers were also more economical than battleships due to the relatively low cost of aircraft[366] and their not requiring to be as heavily armoured.[367] Submarines, which had proved to be an effective weapon during the First World War[368] were anticipated by all sides to be important in the second. The British focused development on anti-submarine weaponry and tactics, such as sonar and convoys, while Germany focused on improving its offensive capability, with designs such as the Type VII submarine and wolfpack tactics.[369] Gradually, improving Allied technologies such as the Leigh light, hedgehog, squid, and homing torpedoes proved victorious.

    World War II saw the advancement of the aircraft into what we know today. Prior to World War II aircraft were made of wood and did not go very fast and were not suitable to wartime use. World War II saw the first aluminum aircraft. World War II allowed aircraft to be used for fighter missions, reconnaissance missions, as bombers, and many other types of missions. A wooden aircraft could not take the kind of damage that the aluminum aircraft could take and keep flying. Nor could a wooden aircraft carry the same amount of ammunitions as their lighter aluminum counterparts could carry. Compared to the aluminum aircraft wooden airplanes were heavy and bulky. Along with the improved aircraft came the first test of the aircraft carrier. The first aircraft carrier was built from the keel up as an aircraft carrier in 1925 which was the USS Saratoga, but it remained untested as a war machine until World War II (Pomar, Pawlowski, & Reynolds, 2013). The aircraft carrier was one of the most important inventions used in World War II. It allowed the combatants of the war to launch planes from a safe distance away from their target so that the carrier did not come under fire.     Fighting for sea control in specific in stances may still be necessary. The carrier battles of World War II were generally aimed at securing command of the sea; however, the carriers still had to function as local sea-control platforms,a role in which they were very effective. However, it should be noted that as the American fleet approached the Japanese home islands, threats from land based defenses required ever greater concentrations of carriers to secure sufficient control of the sea to allow amphibious operations to take place. The advent of nuclear weapons caused significant turmoil within the U.S. military establishment. The newly independent Air Force argued that its intercontinental nuclear bombers made aircraft carriers obsolete. The Navy, for its part, sought to defend the carrier force by making it apart of the nation’s nuclear war plans and deterrent posture. As a nuclear delivery platform, the carrier would operate a bit as it did in the cavalry role, depending on speed and stealth to reach a point at which it could launch its nuclear bombers. After that launch, it would attempt to survive as best it could, either to get back to the United States or to be ready for additional tasking.The point is that in this role, just as in the cavalry and capital-ship roles, its model f operation was to deliver a pulse of power and then scoot—standing and fighting was a recipe for destruction.Keeping risk acceptable was a function of the ability to stay unlocated and untargeted.     A major part of the War was how the carrier replaced the battleships as the main ship as it acted like a floating airfield able to move aircraft in the proximity of enemy fleet formations and land targets. Only three countries (America, Britain, and Japan) built and deployed carriers. The Germans tried to do the same, but military reverses did not allow them. The Japanese started the War with the most effective carrier aircraft with the elegant, but lightly armored A6M Mitsubishi Zero developed in 1941. The Japanese did not create the Zero fighter for carrier use, but rather adapted it for multiple uses. Due to their limited industrial capacity, the Japanese did not introduce new advance aircraft types after the invention of the Zero. Their pilots were still using it when the climatic naval battles were fought in 1944. Meanwhile, British Air Force were still using the venerable Fairey Swordfish biplane at the start of the War.
