Concert Report #2 On November 5th 2014 Sac State University’s Department of Music performed a Latin Jazz Ensemble. They also had American Rivers Latin Jazz Ensemble, and California State University of Los Angeles’s Ensemble perform as well. The Sacramento State Ensemble played a range of Latin music styles like, merengue, cha-cha, mambo, Afro Cuban, and the rumba. CSULA performed some Afro- Carribean music such as Salsa, Timba, and Latin Jazz. American Rivers Ensemble performed songs from Latin Jazz and Afro-Cuban traditions. They played some original compositions by Tito Puente, and Oscar Hernandez along with some of their own arrangements. American River performed two songs Mas Blues by Oscar Hernandez, and Joseito arranged by Scott Martin. American Rivers Ensemble had 16 people playing instruments, four different saxophones including: an alto, two tenor, and a bari sax. They also had two trumpets, and two trombones. Six people were on the percussion instruments, along with one bass player, and one piano player. The two songs that they played were very upbeat, and made me want to get up and dance. These two songs that American River performed were very fast in tempo and definitely got the audience engaged. Sac State’s Ensemeble performed three songs these were: Summertime by George Gershwin with an arrangement by Carlos McCoy, Songomania by Rebeca Mauleon, and Rumba Urbana by Oscar Hernandez. Sac States ensemble had a much smaller group of individuals performing but the performance they gave didn’t lack in any way. Throughout the performance I noticed there was a lot of trumpet, and the piano was a lot faster in the song Summertime. It reminded me of salsa music, something you could dance to with a fast beat. In Songomania there was a lot of Piano, and Drums I loved when they performed this song because most of the instrument players got independent solos to show off their talents. Overall Sac States performance and songs sounded more traditional and slower. They had two trumpet players, one saxophone, trombone, piano, one bass, congas, timbales, and one person playing drums. CSULA’s Afro Latin Ensemble performed Donde Estabas Tu by ErnestoDuarte, Odiame with the arrangement of Edgar Hernandez, Camina y Prende el Fogon by Benigno Echemendia, Moiendo Café by Hugo Blanco, La Hija de Lola Raul Marrero, and Cuando te Vea by Tito Puente. All of CSULA’s performances reminded me of salsa music, the piano was very overpowering. These songs were very fast, with the singing it almost felt like I was sitting in a restaurant having a good time. They had five people singing, four people on woodwind instruments, four people on Brass instruments, one person playing the guitar, one person on piano, two people playing brass instruments, and five people on percussion instruments. Afro Cuban Jazz rhythmically is based on asymmetrical lines, with a rhythm section of ostinato patterns from Cuban dance music. Throughout the performance I noticed the musicians started by playing a standard melody, many others play an improvised solo, and then everyone played the melody again. It seemed like the percussion instruments were featured in a solo pretty often. I noticed in the performance they used two hardwood sticks, or claves; these hold the rhythm together. A lot of the songs were played in a duple-pulse structure (4/4, 2/4, or 2/2). This concert was pretty awesome, it was upbeat the dynamics of the music were very loud as in powerful and intense. With how fast the tempo was of the songs they were very lively, quick, and busy. At times you had one instruments playing a solo, and the next thing would be everyone playing the melody together. The rhythm of the music had a very strong beat, and had a homophony texture where two or more parts moved together in harmony, which created the chords in the music. Overall I think I would definitely go to another Latin Jazz concert, it was a really fun setting to be in and how intense and powerful the music was really captured my attention, and even had me tapping my feet and nodding my head.

A good electric guitar player is part of the group as well. They also at one point had a woman with a nice singing voice perform with them. She sing several songs with them. Next, I found out why they had the Bad New Jazz & Blues Orchestra again at the festival. In the band, one member acted as their conductor. Several individuals play saxophone. A couple of individuals plays horns. Three trumbones are involve, a woman sings well in the band and unlike Space Train had key board player in it. The trumpet players were good and I am not what you call a fan of them. In fact, I like the singing of this woman better than the singer in Space Train. It was very well organized orchestra. People in the audience must have agree because a couple…

The quintet consisted of Adam Heller, Kendall Fowler, Chandler Boyd, Dan Sitler, and Tim Henderson. They started off with Blue Train by the great John Coltrane. It had a steady tempo and a smooth sound. The trumpet played by Adam Heller stood out during this tune. It was a great piece that the audience enjoyed thoroughly. The next tune played by this quintet is So Dance Samba by A. C. Jobim. The piano played by Chandler Boyd starts the tune out beautifully. The drums played by Tim Henderson keep the fast beat and tempo. The sax played by Kendell Fowler played wonderfully along with the trumpet played by Adam Heller. Both of these talented musicians stood out. The trumpet took the lead for most of this piece, but the bass played by Dan Sitler and the piano still stood out at portions. This piece ended on a loud note. Their next tune is Grass Fed that was impressively created by their director Scott Routenberg in one day. This tune had a fast tempo and a happy feel. The trumpet played by Adam Heller and the sax played by Kendell Fowler stood out during most of this piece. It was a very impressive and appealing piece. I enjoyed each piece of this quintet’s…

“Dixie jazz band one-step” was recorded in 1917 by the “Original Dixieland Jazz Band” (ODJB) who inherited much instrumentation from New Orleans Brass Band tradition. In this piece they made use of a typical small combo with a ‘frontline’, including cornet, clarinet and trombone, and a ‘rhythm’ section consisting of piano and drums. Charlie Parker’s Re-boppers also used a small combo, but with Alto sax and trumpet (replacing the out of date cornet) in the frontline, and piano, drums and bass in the rhythm section in “Ko-Ko” recorded in 1945.…

Music has much more to offer than what we just hear on the radio, whether it be its genre or the experience it can give us. There are four performances which exemplify this: the “Arabian Waltz” by the Silkroad Ensemble; “Believe” by John Pascuzzi, Steve Sklar, and Dr. Richard Grossman; "Quarter Chicken Dark," "Attaboy," and "Here And Heaven" by Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile, Stuart Duncan, and Aoife O'Donovan; and “One Love” by the JJI Exile Brothers. The “Arabian Waltz” by the Silkroad Ensemble is a suspenseful yet intriguing song. I was initially surprised at the sheer amount of people and different instruments, as there were many I didn’t even recognize.…

On Friday, December 6th, I attended the Sac State Vocal Jazz Ensembles. The show began with special guests Christian Brothers Vocal Jazz. This young group of singers were extremely talented for their age. They held their harmonies and expressed their talents in each piece they performed. It was quite impressive and heartwarming because these students looked so into the music that it showed the passion they have for singing and vocal jazz. Following these talented young students, the Sac State Jazz Singers came on stage and did an excellent job at their pieces as well. I appreciated the song choices and arrangements for each piece. They definitely showed the hard work and practice they put into each piece and I overly enjoyed the show they put on. With all of the songs from both groups, dynamics, harmonies, unison, scatting, and different rhythms, especially in 4/4 time signature, were portrayed throughout.…

They played about 5 different songs but I could only catch four of them. The first song they played was called “You Don’t Know What Love is”. They didn’t mention who made the song. The song had a rough texture. All the instruments were playing very loud and wildly throughout the song. There wasn’t much form to this song. The saxophone was playing its own tune while the piano, cello, and drums had some type of repetition. There wasn’t a melody. I felt like they were playing off each other’s energy. There was some rhythm to this song but majority of the time it sounded like it was all freestyle. I think its just because jazz is played like that. The dynamics to this song was very soft and low key aside from the saxophone. The tempo was slow at first then it really picked up 30 seconds into the song. Overall…

The CSUN Jazz A Band performed at the Valley Performing Arts Center on February 28, 2013 at 7:30 PM. The director, John Daversa, put together two sections of the show; the first section exhibited the works of Dee Barton, a local jazz musician that recently passed away and the second half introduced two renowned vocalists that accompanied the jazz band. The first vocalist was Renee Olstead, an entertaining vocalist with a strong and soulful voice. The second vocalist was Tierney Sutton who has an amazing talent of creating an instrument with her voice. Each unique section created different environments and tones that resonated the styles of each musician.…

The first song I’m going to write about is Swing, Swing, Swing. The beat of this song was strong and dominate, while the tempo was played very quickly giving the song’s tone color a bright, high energy, dancing feel to it and the overall volume was loud. The horns also added to the rhythm by adding a lot of syncopation throughout the piece as they played extra loud accent notes with high pitches. The theme of the song had variations between the big band and the soloists that created a call and response between the two as well. Since it was a big band playing this piece the instruments included: saxophones, trumpets, bass, trombones, etc. so it essentially had the sound of a marching band. The trumpet solo had a fast tempo and it was played at a loud volume, whereas when the bass and drums played the volume soften up, while the tempo was still being played fast. While this song was written music it seemed there was room for improvisation for the soloists, I noticed the saxophone player close his eyes a few times during his part.…

The dance performance was called Synapse Dance Theater, a Santa Monica College contemporary dance ensemble, which took place at The Broad Stage on November 6, 2013 at 4pm. In the dance performance there were twelve dance works that were remarkably different in various ways. Each work gave a different feeling and emotion while being unrelated to each other all at the same time. The choice of music had a tremendous impact on each of the dance works as well as being different from one another. The fast and slow music and the powerful and energetic choreography made Synapse what it is, a fascinating and extraordinary dance performance.…
