World And Me

The opening paragraph of “Between the World and Me” had me thoroughly confused. I had no idea where the author was going to take me and what a journey it was. To have a modern point of view of a black man’s life and how he is raising his family with today’s prejudices is extremely interesting. I don’t have any black friends, just coworkers that I hang out with out after work once in a while. Even though we have had some great conversations about some personal items in our life, I don’t believe I’ll ever truly understand or appreciate what they deal with on a daily basis. I know my close friends, family, and I are under the impression that racism is on its way out of our society and definitely not in our world. Well what do we know about it? We are all white with no close minority friends that we would feel comfortable conversing about this topic. The black women at work aren’t going to tell me that I’m naïve and share their experiences from work or even
I was able to feel his growth as a person and as an adult, but was frustrated that he felt that he didn’t need to finish his education. Even before the birth of his son, he was contemplating not finishing college and I found those thoughts very disappointing. I wanted him to fight through his own dissatisfaction at not finding the answers he was looking for and to channel that into his education. The stories the author told about his heroes, the ancestors he wanted to put in a trophy case, were very vivid and I too, was disappointed when his history professors showed him another side of the history that he had read about. Although that is something I can relate with, the history of my country and the “noble” presidents I had learned about in my childhood have now been brought down all around me and I too will have to find a way to reconcile with what I thought to be true to what I have just
