In “Women, Work and Protest in the Early Lowell Mills,” the author talks about the working life and it’s foundation in the early industrial revolution by talking about the Lowell Mill girls. During this time, America was undergoing a transformation from agricultural country to a powerful industrialized nation. Today, men are holding more strenuous factory jobs but back in those days, women occupied them. Most women were between the ages of 15 to 30 and half of them were unmarried and about to leave their houses. It was quite dangerous. The women who worked there had more than one task to complete. They may have held on certain duty but for many different machines. Because women had so much to do and worked long days, they became extremely fatigued. These factors were health risks for factory work. Also, the women accepted their pay because it paid for their houses and they still had some money for themselves. Factories were extremely efficient, so they overproduced causing the value of the fabric they made to decrease. The managers decided to lower their wages which made the women angry. As Dublin stated that they were benefits for the women, this was one of the benefits which were their sense of community. They would come to depend on each other to reach their goals. The author talked about how women would call special groups and meetings to discuss how to best solve the wage decrease problems. They talked about how they would approach their managers and tell them about how they dislike the wage cut and then they would plead for restoration of normal wages. At this time, men didn’t care to be involved. So in this case, the women performed organized strikes. They would organize marches and protests and refused to attend work. They stayed out of work for months but the managers still didn’t give in. As a result, some women were angry enough to quit and return back home but the others would unhappily return to their underpaid

    In the first section of the chapter the authors talk about how during World War II women made great strides toward becoming equals with men. They did this by going to work in factories. Women in the work place were not uncommon before the WWII era, but the actual women working in the factories changed. Before the WWII era majority of the women working in the factories were young, single women, but then that shifted to older, married women. Of the 6.5 million women in the work force more than half of them were the older, married women during this time period. And they were influenced to work in the factories not only because of society pressures, but because of the propaganda posters and ads about “Rosie the Riveter” who was a strong woman who worked in the factories and other jobs. This gave women more civil rights than before. However, when the war ended and all the fighting males came back many of the women were pushed out of the factories and back to their home lives. This also meant that many of the rights and authorities that they had gained were expunged.     With the advancement of Industry Lowell started to operate textile plants. From the early 1800’s to the 1850’s the number of plants doubled, tripled, and quadrupled. This boom in industry caused Lowell to come up with new ways to produce items. These plants produced many different items. However, it was not the items that were produced that were unique, it was how they were produced that was. In Lowell the use of female labor was much higher here than in most of the rest of the country. By 1836, out of the 6,000 employees in the town, 5,000 were women. (The Northern Nation- The two Nations, 2011). Women were paid less then men, however they had more chances to learn and get an education than anywhere else in the entire United States. Lowell also was producing textiles at a higher rate than anywhere. In fact they produced more than the entire south combined. This was what made the town so unique.     The women trade union league workers wanted shorter hours, better pay, safer shops, and unions. They decided to no longer keep quiet, so they went on strike. These women were the leaders of the largest women strike in American history. More than 50 factories gave in to their workers demand but the triangle factory owner’s Max Blanck and Isaac Harris refused to surrender. The owners tried so hard to stop these women from protesting that they even paid police and prostitutes to beat these women.     In factories the working conditions of workers were not good. Workers would have cut off limbs ad even worst they could be killed if they were not careful when working. Also the workers would have long hours with little to no breaks and if they were to lack on their job they would be punished. As stated in the excerpt, Okaya Japan (1900), workers would have thirteen to fourteen hour days with fifteen minute breaks for breakfast and lunch and then only two more ten minute breaks, (Doc 5). If a worker has an average working day of thirteen to fourteen days with little breaks it makes their life and working conditions stressful and harsh. It would be hard for the workers to do this as they would become tired and then would lack on work. As a result of lacking they would be punished. The female workers in England were treated almost the same way in the hours they worked and other conditions in the workplace. As reported by the primary source Hannah Goode’s to the Factory Inquiry Commission, (England, 1833) it tells how workers would work from five in the morning till seven at night with breaks only to eat their dinner meal, (Doc 10).     The Industrial Revolution was the greatest transformation period in human history. When people think about the Industrial revolution, they think about big steel, machines, and railroads. What’s missing are the exhausted, overworked laborers that operated the machinery that made things run. A prime example is the female textile mill workers from England and Japan.     Women were underpaid, expected to stay at home to run the household, and abused, all without others taking a second glance at the morality of these situations. From the 1830s to approximately the 1860s, women who chose to work in mills made about three to three and a half dollars a week; this was about one third to half of a man’s wages (Dublin, Working Class Women). At that time, three to three and half dollars was much more than a farmer’s daughter could earn but was still not enough for a single person to live off of. (Dublin). A single woman making low wages could only afford to pay their rent; they were unable to buy extra necessities such as food or clothing. Due to low income and being unable to support themselves, a woman's goal was to get married. After marriage, she would be supported by her husband’s income and no longer had to worry about the financial burden alone. Consequently, married life could be considered almost as hard as the life of a single woman. Women were still required to get a job after marriage to help pay for needs. Women also tended to eat less than their husbands and children to ensure their family was their main priority and was managed adequately. Women who failed to manage the household sufficiently or those who spent too much money were often abused. The abuse would go unintervened unless a man beat another man’s wife or death was suspected.
