Introduction Salicylic acid, used in production of substances used worldwide such as commonly used analgesic drug aspirin(cite), can be obtained from natural resources such as wintergreen oil or can be synthesized. Through a series of chemical reactions with cheap raw materials beginning with beginning with methyl salicylate and, it is a cheaper and more efficient method of making salicylic acid from natural resource of benzene. The purpose of the experiment is to prepare salicylic acid methyl salicylate, and compare it to the one already made naturally from benzene to determine any differences

Important process of isolation that is commonly used is to vacuum filter a solution that allows for the separation of insoluble substances present in a solution. The decision to choose vacuum filtration against another method such as gravity filtration is due to the suction pressure in vacuum filtration that creates faster and more effective suction [1]. Once separated, purifying a substance can occur by recrystallizing the solid substance by heating it in water to its boiling point, making it fully dissolved and soluble due to the added source of energy. Then reversing the conditions by cooling the solution, allows pure substance to form crystals at a higher temperature with other ‘like’ crystals that make the substance more pure, while the impurities remain dissolved in the solution till the solution is further …show more content…

    In this experiment, the Oil of Wintergreen is put into an Erlenmeyer flask containing sodium hydroxide to create sodium salicylate. The solution is then refluxed which means that the solution will be boiled in a base, then condensed in a condenser. This replaces the carbon on the ester at carbon 1, with an oxygen atom which will have an ionic bond with a sodium anion.     The OH group on the benzene ring in salicyclic acid reacts with acetic anhydride to form an ester functional group. Thus the formation of acetylsalicyclic acid (aspirin) is referred to as an esterification reaction, which requires the presence of H+ (H2SO4 in our case).     Methyl Salicylate has been used for a long time for its pleasant odour and flavour. The objective of this experiment was to carry an organic synthesis; the preparation of salicylic acid from methyl salicylate. To do an organic synthesis, it is needed to chemically modify the molecules of another compound to end up with the desire compound. Methyl salicylate is the major constituent of wintergreen oil, which is why it was used in this experiment as the starting material. The new technique used in this experiment is heating under reflux. Many organic compounds, when heated become volatile and it is easy to lost some. The idea of this technique is to add a vertical condenser to the mixture flask. This will stop the water escaping as it touches the cold surface of the condenser. The condenser has a permanent water flow going in and out and this is why the water drip back to the flask as it touches the cold surface. Vacuum filtration was used isolate the solid from the liquid-solid mixture after the sulphuric acid is qqadded and that the precipitation has occurred and that the pH is down to 2. Recrystallization was then used to purify the salicylic acid formed earlier. Boiling water was used to perform the recrystallization. Melting point helped to characterize organic compound and to assure its purity.…

    When the sulfuric acid was combined with the isopentyl alcohol and acetic acid, the mixture turned red (due to residue of another chemical remaining on glassware). During the wash of the organic layer, two distinct layers appeared, a yellow and a clear. The drying process took around 20 minutes through gravity filtration.
