Wilbur and Orvil Wright
Wilbur and Orville Wright were the sons of Milton Wright, a bishop of the United Brethren in Christ. Wilbur was born on April 16, 1867, in Millville, Indiana. Orville was born on August 19, 1871, in Dayton, Ohio.

Both brothers attended high school, but did not receive diplomas.

Wilbur and Orville were the only members of the Wright family who did not attend college or marry. Wilbur's plans to enter college came to an end when he was injured in a hockey accident

Brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright built and flew the first airplane in human history. The brothers were engineers who founded the Wright Cycle Comany in Dayton, Ohio in 1892. While the bicycle business sustained them, they began to experiment with kites, gliders and other flying machines, always with an eye to creating a powered machine that could carry a man aloft. Their first successful flight, with Orville at the controls, took place at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on 17 December 1903. The plane covered 120 feet in about 12 seconds

They first tackled the problem of controlling the machine in all three axes of movement (up and down, side to side, forward and backward) without resorting to the pilot twisting or shifting his body weight. Afterobserving buzzards control their flight by twisting their wing tips, they settled on wing warping as the best method of maintaining balance.

To test their theories, the Wrights traveled to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, an ideal site for wind and terrain. Following experiments with a biplane kite, they built several gliders, each more sophisticated than its predecessor. During the process they discovered errors in the mathematical tables that Lilienthal had created to explain lift. To achieve the correct calculations, theybuilt their own wind tunnel with a homemade pressure-testing device to check the amount of lift in various wing configurations.

They also worked on propellers for the craft. The Wrights returned to Kitty Hawk in September 1903, ready to try

Everyday millions of people fly in an airplane but no one person knows who is responsible. The ones who are responsible are the Wright Brothers. On December 17, 1903 the Wright Brothers did the unthinkable, invented the airplane (Wright-Brothers.Org). The airplane is still widely used today and every day. As a result of the invention of the airplane the Wright Brothers forever changed aviation history. The Brothers invented the airplane, officially started the “air race,” and created new technology.…

Though they invented the airplane, many prototypes of the airplane already existed, but none of them were controllable. The Wright Brothers’ love for airplanes started when they were little. They had recieved a rubber band powered helicopter, which was of course, uncontrollable. From there, they didn’t do much more regarding airplanes until later. The first job that the Wright Brothers had had no correlation to making airplanes, as they both worked in a print shop. As a hobby they started to fix, and create bikes out of spare parts, this hobby eventually evolved into a job for the brothers. Their time in fixing bikes resparked their love for inventing, bringing airplanes back into the picture. Creating the bikes also gave the bros experience with creating transportation…

On December 17, 1903 crewmen John Daniels, Will Dough, Adam Etheridge, W.C. Binkley, and Johnny Moore, a teenager from Nags Head, would witness an event that would change the world forever. The Wright Brothers would make history in achieving the first sustained air flight. While this flight lasted only 12 seconds, it was nevertheless the first in the history of the world in which a machine carrying a man had raised itself by its own power into the air, had flown forward without reducing speed, and had finally landed at a point as high as that from which it…

Hypothesis: To make our paper airplane fly farther, Naveen and I decided to bend the sharp tip of our plane down. We made this modification because the wings of the airplane enable it to fly farther since it makes the airplane stay longer in the air. We believed that because the wings enlarge the volume of the airplane, the air resistance on it would become more, making it able to stay in the air longer. The wings also act as vertical stabilizers of the plane. Therefore, by bending down the tip of the plane, we believed that it would essentially act as a ‘third wing’, which would help our plane glide for an extended period of time. Bending down the tip of the plane will also add weight to the tip, which would help stabilize the airplane.…

The death of the German glider Otto Lilienthal is what made Wilbur become interested in flight. He studied the flight of birds and how they carried themselves in the air even more. The brothers were determined to make this experiment work. Once they set their mind on doing something, nothing or no one could stop them from proceeding until the job were finished. For everything to be successful they had to go to a place that had a wind strong enough for the glider to stay in the air. This is what led them to Kitty Hawk, which is known for the most powerful…

They are probably one of the most important inventions ever. Orville and Wilbur Wright changed history on December 17, 1903 at Kill Devil Hill, right outside of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina (Rosenberg). The Wrights invented the first airplane which aided in the fighting of World War I and created a new form of transportation. The Wright’s began with a four cylinder, eight horsepower, gasoline engine that weighed 152 pounds; which took them six weeks to build.…

Wright goes out to get a job so that he does not have to worry about being hungry all the time; although he associates with kids that are practically bad apples, he is not fully like them, and is different from his odd group. Getting a job at such a young age should prove that he is not relying on a lot of people to prove for him no matter how badly the odds are stacked against him. Wright confirms this trait when he goes among the students and asks if they have any job that he could possibly take.(The next day at school I inquired among the students about jobs and was given the name of a white family who wanted a boy to do chores”)(Wright 145). As it is shows in this passage it is very easy to see how he does not need his mother, or father providing for him. He can take care of himself by getting a job.…

Wilbur and Orville Wright were American inventors and pioneers of aviation. In 1903 the Wright brothers achieved the first powered, sustained and controlled airplane flight; they surpassed their own milestone two years later when they built and flew the first fully practical airplane. The Wright Brothers used intelligence, experience, and intenuity to design their aircraft. From studying Gods creation in the form of birds-flight, they were helped to develop their own creation. Wilbur and Orville Wright changed the world through their invention of the first heavier-than-air flying machine. This invention opened the world for aviation to begin and advance. Airplanes have…

One person they closely followed was German aviator Otto Lilienthal. After Lilienthal died in a glider crash, the brothers began work on their experiments. Both Wilbur and Orville were determined to develop a successful design. Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, known for its strong winds, became their test center. The two brothers wondered how a pilot must balance an aircraft in the air, just as a bicyclist balances on the road (Engler). They began to create gliders to test their theories. The first two gliders failed to perform as the Wrights had hoped. They began viewing how birds angled their wings for balance and control. The Wrights attempted to duplicate this method developing a concept known as “wing warping” (History.com Staff). Wilbur then resolved to create a wind tunnel in which he could test the best wing shape for an airplane. Soon after, “their third glider became the first fully controllable aircraft, with roll, pitch, and yaw controls” (Engler). With help from Charlie Taylor, the Wright’s mechanic, they were able to design and build a gasoline engine powerful enough to propel an airplane. This extraordinary achievement would one day change the world. At the time, however, these genius brothers still had much to perfect. The 1903 Wright Flyer did actually fly, but it was hard to control. They soon established the world’s first test flight facilities at Huffman Prairie.…

The Wright brothers were unlike any other inventors of their time. Orville and Wilbur Wright grew up in Dayton, Ohio. Orville was born on August 19, 1871, and Wilbur was born on April 16, 1867. They did well in high school, but did not attend college, and instead opened up their own bike shop. This shop gave them the funds to pursue their goal of making the world’s first practical airplane. They got the idea of building the airplane from one of their father’s letters. Their dad, Milton, was a bishop and was often away from home for work. He was a very kind and good-hearted man…
