Research shows that teenagers experience a change in their internal sleep clocks so that waking up and going to sleep early are difficult. When I go to school every morning I have to wake up at six o’ clock to get on the bus at seven. Then I have to go to school for eight hours. By the time I get home I be too tired to do anything else. I don’t go to sleep until ten or eleven o ‘clock. School starts at eight a.m. and doesn’t end until three p.m. some kids have jobs they have to go to after school. sometimes their shift doesn’t end until ten or eleven p.m. So when they get home from work they don’t have time to do anything but sleep especially if they have chores or homework. Some kids have little siblings they have to take care of until …show more content…
If school started at this time we also wouldn’t be tired in class. We would be more energetic and alert to what’s going on. Kids may even start to like school because they don’t have to get up at this early time. One of the many reasons why I hate school is because I have to wake up so early, if they changed the time we go I might start to hate school a little less. Some students don’t pay attention in class because they have to wake up so early causing them to sleep. These early mornings don’t only affect us as students but they also affect the bus drivers. Bus drivers also have to wake up early only they have to get up way earlier than us. If bus drivers are sleepy in the mornings when they drive the kids to school, they are putting not only their lives in danger but also the kids on the bus. Falling asleep behind the wheel could cause an accident causing kids to get hurt or even lose their lives. This is a serious issue the school board should put in consideration. In conclusion, waking up and going to sleep early is very difficult for some kids including myself. Some kids wake up early in the morning causing them to be sleepy in school. Students aren’t the only ones affected by the early mornings, bus drivers and teachers are also suffering from it. If schools started at a later time it would help a lot. I would be happy if I found out school started at ten or eleven instead of

Firstly, there are a plethora of other variables preventing students from adequate sleep. Such examples include an excruciating amount of homework, extra-curricular activities and striving to maintain the Triangle of Health. These additional issues make it even more difficult to get enough sleep. The large amount of homework sometimes has students staying up all hours of the night. Some might argue that if students manage their time efficiently they should be able to go to sleep at a reasonable hour, but even the most organized, intelligent students have trouble completing their huge quantity of homework by the time recommended getting to bed. Next, students are greatly encouraged to participate in after school activities, however, enough sleep is practically impossible to attain when most activities run until five and time is lost to complete work. Finally, students are educated in health class to maintain the Triangle of Health, a diagram representing three crucial elements to being an overall healthy person – physical, mental, and social health. So, students are trying to maintain each form of health by attempting to make time for friends and family, hobbies, at least a half hour of exercise, and stimulation of the…

By starting school later, it would allow students to score higher in their core classes because students are able to get more sleep, which results in increased performances (Wahlstrom 10). To further support this, Wahlstrom mentions in a study done in multiple different high schools, “Statistically significant increases in the 1st period grade point average in one or more core courses of English, math, social studies, and science with start times from 8:00-8:30 [in the morning]” (11). She then continues with, “Significant increases in grade point average in all 1st-period core courses for all semesters in all grades in Jackson Hole High School in Wyoming, with a start time of 8:55 [in the morning]” (11). One reason school start times should be later than they are now is because junior high and high school students are “programmed” to stay up late and sleep in. During teenage years, students bodies are designed to stay up later and sleep in. Both When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare, an article written by Scholastic, and the National Sleep Foundation website agree with just that! Nancy Shute, an award-winning science journalist, stated on npr.com “...it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to fall asleep before 10:30.” If students fall asleep at 10:30 pm and get the recommended amount of rest, which is 9 ½ hours, students should not wake up until 7:00 am. Some schools have already started class at this…
