Why Is John Proctor Important In The Crucible
The Crucible is a classic tragedy. John Proctor is the tragic hero in the play by Arthur Miller. These events happen in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. There are many pivotal characters in the play but the most significant is John Proctor. He values his reputation and stays true to himself throughout the whole play, is a man of integrity, and is the most relatable character in the story. We love to have someone in every story, play, or even movies and books to love and hate and we love to love John Proctor.
As a character, John Proctor values his reputation and stays honest with himself through the play. He undergoes lots of internal and external struggles but yet, never changes his character. At the end he gets accused for witchcraft. In the story, if you confess to being a witch, you live and if you don’t, you die. Proctor values the Puritan faith and in the end, the “court” makes him admit to being a witch and sign saying he confessed. He doesn’t sign because he unwilling to sign his name to something he doesn’t believe in. He would rather die than to tell more lies. "Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! This one of the many qualities John Proctor has. Proctor has strength in many ways. He always stands up for what he believes in and doesn’t let anyone change his opinion. One way showing his integrity is he feels sick for commiting adultery with Abigail. He accepts the fact that it happened but doesn’t let it happen again. He says “I’ll cut of my own hand before I touch you again.” to Abigail. He stands up and takes control of the situation and handles it with integrity. He even at one point gets the treat of execution but never backs down which shows a great amount of integrity. Most people would just confess to save their life but he is honest and has self morals and doesn’t want to break
