Why Is Hernan Cortes Important
Hernan Cortes was a brilliant spanish conquistador that first sailed to the “New World” at the age of 19. He was born in 1485 and left Spain in 1504 in search of a place to expand Mexico for King Charles. I believe Hernan Cortes is most important because he over ran the Aztec emperor Montezuma, destroyed Tenochtitlan, and built Mexico City. In 1518, Cortes sailed from Cuba to explore the Yucatan Peninsula. When he first reached the Peninsula and gained news of the Aztecs, and Spain canceled his voyage, but he prevailed. Cortes commanded 11 ships, 550 men and 16 horses, and got the Tlaxcalan to join him against the Aztec empire. Cortes marched to Tenochtitlan and took Montezuma hostage, gaining control over all of the Aztec people. He had
