GPS and GIS are two pieces used in technology by geographers. GPS stands for Global Position System. A GPS finds the precise location of something of someplace on earth. In the US there are three parts of a GPS. The first part of GPS is the satellites. There are multiple orbiting satellites over the earth placed by the US military. The second part of GPS is the tracking stations. There are tracking stations that control and monitor satellites. The third part of GPS is a receiver. A receiver locates at least four satellites, finds out the distance to each, and pinpoints a location using that information. A GPS is used mostly in navigation. Aircrafts, ships, and cars can use a GPS to stay on course to reach a destination. A GPS is also used to find a specific location.
GPS devices let individuals contribute to making digital maps through companies like Google. People can add information about buildings, bodies of water, and streets into a GPS device to improve digital maps. GPS is useful to geographers when coding the precise location of objects in fieldwork. GIS stands for Geographic Information System. GIS is a computer system that shows geographic data. A GIS captures, stores, queries, and analyzes data. A GIS is useful to geographers when they create maps. Maps made with GIS are generally more attractive and accurate than hand-drawn maps. The location of an object can be measured and recorded onto a computer. Using a number of stored objects on a computer a map can be created. Pen and ink are less effective than GIS. Information can be stored in a layer. Most of the time simple maps use only one layer, but with GIS multiple layers can be added to create a more complex and better
