Why I Like The ICU
The appeal of the Intensive Care Unit has always intrigued me. Between hearing stories from my brother’s experiences in the CCU to watching medical shows, I have always expressed interest in this field of nursing. The ICU employs some of the most skilled and knowledgeable nurses in the hospital. This is a group of nurses that I want to be a part of. One of the main reasons that I like it ICU is because of the fast pace environment. I feel that in a fast pace environment you are able to utilize the skills that you have learned. Using these skills over and over helps you to master them. Working in the ICU lets you use your hands-on skills in critical situations more often than on other floors. Another reason that I like the ICU is because the …show more content…
They are full of knowledge that I am eager to learn. Being able to shadow a nurse in the ICU, you are able to watch how they provide cares for patients that are in a critical condition. This is a floor that you need to be confident in your nursing skills or it could be deadly for the patient. Lastly, I like the ICU because of the variety of patients you see. Many of these patients are in desperate need of your attention and skills to help them survive. Patients come in for many different reasons, but they all need your help to recover from what happened to them. If I am chosen to have an ICU rotation, I will be excited to add more experience to my nursing career. A situation that I had to use problem solving skills was during my shift as a nursing assistant on the mental health floor. I was assigned to a patient in a one to one setting. My patient had a history of aggression towards care takers. During my shift my patient became extremely agitated over reasons at the time were unknown to me. He began to hit the walls and the glass on the doors. As my patient became more and more furious, I assessed the situation and my patient. I tried to think of what might be causing this aggression. I came to the conclusion that the likely …show more content…
I would like to be in the ICU or the Emergency department. I plan on spending most of my time learning new skills and how to manage my patient’s cares safely. I feel that I will learn so much over this 5-year period. I learn best when I can work hands on so that I feel more comfortable asking questions when I need more instruction. After working for a few years, I want to either go back to school for nurse anesthetist or become a travel nurse. I want to become a nurse anesthetist because it could help me to find a position in OR. I always have wanted to see a surgery happen. I also have an interest in anesthesiology. I am fascinated that people can go to sleep for a surgery and wake up without even knowing what happened. My other option of becoming a travel nurse has excited me because of the variety you will experience. Being able to travel across the country and visit multiple different hospitals would be an experience of a life time. At the end of this 5-year period I would like to find a hospital in the Midwest or the West coast to settle down and work for many years with the experience that I have

During my career I have performed in many different roles, including patient care technician, new graduate nurse, staff nurse, triage nurse, preceptor and mentor for students and new employees, and even the role of charge nurse. The challenges of working in a high volume emergency department, caring for a diverse and complex patient population have been abundant. Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) captures my attention due to the fact that it creates an atmosphere of family blending and technology usage. As a neonatal registered nurse I can follow the infants from birth to discharge; and also see the parents grow and take care of their infants when the time comes. The NICU can be a rewarding place because focus is put more on the nurses in the NICU. There is more of an inter-professional relationship with doctors and neonatal nurses due to nurses being the first source of critical information for an infant.…

My enthusiasm for nursing first took root and flourished after losing my father. My father became very ill and needed medical care. When I saw that my father was starting to become weak and frail, I thought to myself "What access would my father have to good quality health care?" I asked my mother "Where is the nearest hospital?" and my mother replied, "It's about twenty miles away child." It was from that moment on I began to realize a desire to engage in a profession that focused on the area of helping sick people.
