A funeral is an event where a group of friends gather to mourn the death yet honor the life of the deceased. The day is reserved to gather and remember and tell stories. We must remember that by honoring them we may have lost a loved one yet they’re not forgotten. Similarly, memorials recognize a person’s actions and honor their sacrifice with a tribute. The horrifying day of September 11, 2001, where over 3,000 lives were taken by Islamic extremists hijacking and crashing four planes was a national disaster; yet, as a country, we stood together and built the 9/11 Memorial Museum to honor the lives that were taken in the attack. A quote inscribed in the wall of the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City, New York, from the epic The Aeneid relates how these victims will be honored throughout history; it reads, “No day shall [ever] erase you from the memory of time” (Virgil, pg. 60). Another day we take to honor the past are holidays set aside to mourn and celebrate. These days are holidays which are annual dates to recognize and honor the people of that day. Memorial Day is a holiday set aside to honor the men and women who have served in the armed forces.
