Why Do People Drink And Drive

We often hear of all the negative aspects of drinking and driving, but that doesn't seem to stop people from doing it. Every two minutes, a person is injured in a drunk driving crash ( National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). It's rather scary that so many people die or become injured because of others reckless actions. People will usually focus on the effects of drunk driving and the victim's family. What we seldom ask is why did they decide to drink and drive, Or how the intoxicated drivers family feel. Before people being to spread awareness and want to make a change in intoxicated driving; we must first learn and understand why people drink and drive.

Although drinking and driving is dangerous, people still tend to do it, but why? According to a study “more than 4 million U.S. adults admit they drink and drive at least sometimes”(Maggie) People drink for variety of reasons: celebrations, peer pressure, emotional reasons, or just because they want to drink. Because alcohol can be used to escape problems or for comfort, people tend to forget the dangers when drunk and behind the wheel. When someone goes out to a social gathering, they often feel as if they are entitled to drink even if they weren't planning to do so and proceed to drink. Instead of calling a family member, he decided to drive home. Since he was never caught drunk driving he thought it couldn't happen to him.
