Why Did Japan Attack Pearl Harbor
December 7, 1941 is referred to the date which will live in infamy, an event happened that day that caused “the world to turn”. Japan attacked US ships at Pearl Harbor in Oahu, Hawaii, it lasted two hours and did a lot of damage. About 2,400 Americans died with another 1,000 injured, and only 55 Japanese died. The next day after the attack on Pearl Harbor President Roosevelt declared war on Japan which cause the United States to enter World War ll. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor for a few different reasons. Japan’s plan was to prevent President Roosevelt from getting involved in their internal affairs. To fix this problem, they used aircraft carriers until they got closer to Hawaii. There were 6 aircraft carriers used to transport airplanes, which included Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, Hiryu, Shokaku, and Zuikaku. These aircraft carriers carried 408 aircraft used in the attack. Of the 408, 360 were used in the two attack waves, and the remainder were used as combat air patrol. Combat air patrol was responsible for making sure that Japanese bombers were protected from American aircraft. The Japanese used torpedoes to destroy the American fleet. The torpedos were specifically designed to be effective in shallow waters, they were equipped with an anti-roll mechanism and a rudder extension. The Japanese were successful in sinking 18 ships, including 5 battleships and destroyed about 300 airplanes.
