Who Was Responsible For The Deaths Of Romeo And Juliet Essay

Most people think stories swill always end with the famous "happily ever after". However, that is not the case with William Shakespeare's, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. The main characters, Romeo and Juliet, have an unintended love that ultimately leads to their deaths. But it is not just their fault that they died, for there are many people contributing to this tragedy. Despite these many contributions, one stands out on top as the main reason for Romeo and Juliet's deaths. Although he has a religious background, Friar Lawrence is the most responsible for their deaths because of these three main reasons: he marries Romeo and Juliet, he gives Juliet a sleeping potion, and he does not make sure his letter makes it to Romeo.
To begin, Friar's first big mistake happens when he joins Romeo and Juliet in "holy matrimony". In Act II, scene vi, lines 1-37, he performs the ceremony that sets in motion the end of the lovers' lives. This marriage is to be kept secret because Romeo and Juliet's families are in a constant feud with each other. When Romeo and Juliet are married, they are unable to spend time with each other because of their feuding families. Juliet becomes desperate to see him, so she agrees to Friar's desperate plan. Romeo then hears she is supposedly "dead", so he goes and kills himself. His death causes Juliet's death also, because she does not want to live without him. In the end, their unfortunate love turns to their untimely death. Encompassing both reality and romance, the lovers' story fails to uphold the expected "happily ever after", and takes a twist ending to the opposite:
