Who Is Tom Robinson Trial In To Kill A Mockingbird
“Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed” (Lee, 323). In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, a trial, in the year of 1935, between a low class white family and a black man occurs. It is significant because narrator, Scout Finch, and brother, Jem Finch, learn through this case their key morals dealing with racism. Tom Robinson, the black male, is accused of raping a white female by the name of Mayella Violet Ewell. Mayella, daughter of Bob Ewell, comes from a family of ignominious descent. Whereas Tom is said to be a nice, hard working man. Father of Scout and Jem, Atticus Finch is given the position of defending Tom in court trying to prove him innocent of this racial hate crime. Tom and the rest of his race were called names and labeled as ‘Monsters.” Mockingbirds are misjudged and shot because people just assume that the bird is harmful.     Atticus shows that his words are not empty, and he practices what he has taught his children. Atticus conveys empathy for the minorities around him, such as the Ewell family and the Negroes. Tom Robinson, a black man, is being represented in court by Atticus. Atticus empathizes for Tom who is wrongly accused of taking advantage of Mayella Ewell, a poor white women, and tries his hardest to win the case for Tom. After losing the trial and humiliating the Ewells in the process, Bob Ewell, Mayella’s father, spits in Atticus’ face and threatens to get even with him.
