Who Is The Savagery In Lord Of The Flies

Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, tells a story about a group of British school boys ages 6-12 get stuck on a remote island after a plane crash. The boys are forced to civilize and survive on the island until help comes. They learn that the only way to get off the island is creating a signal fire so passing planes and ships can see them. Ralph gives the job of hunting and maintaining the fire to Jack and his choir.They begin to learn about the “Beast” that is thought to be on the island. Jack and his men decide to only hunt for meat to survive while letting the signal fire go out. Jack begins to turn into a savage because he wants to hunt and kill so much. The boys all think that the beast was something that they could hunt and kill when really it was inside of all of them. Simon said “what I mean is… maybe it’s only us” (page 89). Simon said this during a meeting about the Beast and all of the boys thought that he was foolish . This shows us how the Beast could be inside of them and later we figure out that this is true . “Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill!” page (143). The pig head on a spear says this to Simon in Simon’s clearing. This shows that all the boys have an inner darkness inside of all of them. The pig head says that he is a part of Simon. The pig head is the Lord of the Flies. The Beast represents the inner darkness inside of all of the boys. The boys went through many bad things that released there inner darkness. From brutally killing to sow to Jack and his choir becoming blood thirsty savages who killed Simon and Piggy. “Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of a man’s heart and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy.” The boys had all lost there innocence after they had killed Simon.
