Whirligig Essay-descriptions and how they affected their viewer
In Whirligig by Paul Fleischman, Brent travels to the four corners of the United States of America and builds whirligigs on his mission of repentance. Each Whirligig has a unique appearance and meets the needs of it’s (observer?) in a different way.
The first whirligig was put in a state park near Puget Sound. Being Brent’s first whirligig , he had a little trouble creating it. Originally, it was supposed to be an angel playing a full sized orchestral harp, but he accidentally broke off it’s wing while he was filing it. Afterwards, it became just an ordinary human who looked as if she was playing the harp when the wind blew.
The key observer of this whirligig was Tony, a 5th grader, who wants to play baseball but is forced to play violin instead. When he went camping with his family over the summer, his mother spotted it and used it as reinforcement to practice his instrument. “Remember the harp player Anthony, always practicing” she would say. This finally pushed him over the edge, he found a way to get out of practicing and messed up horribly at his big rehearsal. Afterwards, his teacher told him that if the whirligig played all the time, it would break. Then he quit and followed his baseball dreams.
The second whirligig was made in San Diego and placed on the porch of a youth hostel there. This wind toy depicted a whale whose spout went up and down in the wind. After realizing that Lea was not in this whirligig Brent added a mermaid to the top of the whale’s spout.
The viewer of this whirligig is Jenny’s grandmother. She came to the states after World War II with the memories of those that died in the concentration camps still plaguing her. This toy showed her that she should live a life of laughing, not sadness. And that you should live all the laughs that were taken away from them.
The third whirligig was made in a beachside parking lot in Tampa, Florida. It featured a marching band that had a trombonist, a trumpeter, a clarinetist, and a drummer.

Brent had continued to question his purpose, but ended up giving himself harder details to perform. “He considered giving the whale her face, then painting her in its belly as Jonah, then looked through the book, saw a design with a mermaid, and decided to change its hair to black and transpose it to the top of the spout.” (pg. 73) This shows Brent’s determination because he is now modifying whirligigs to make them his own which means he is taking this seriously. By the third whirligig, Brent was actually enjoying his travels and work, but blamed it all on the fact that he had nothing else to do with his life. “The whirligig featured a drummer, a trumpet player, a clarinetist, and a man with a trombone.” (pg. 93) of the designs had to be very intricate and well thought out. The thought of messing up or not giving his best effort to was not okay in Brent’s mind. He felt he owed it to Lea for her death and his…

Jenny feels helpless as someone that she loves and close to is dying – her grandmother. When the old woman tells Jenny to give her a ride around town, Jenny decides to help her because her mom wasn't there, and she somehow desperately needed to see this place. So Jenny and her grandmother get into the car, and drive around the town. Her grandmother tells her to go places that don't even make any sense, like a birch tree, and an old run down house. This old house was Rachel's, her long dead sister. Jenny is confused at first about her grandmother's directions, and she is frustrated at not knowing what is going on in grandmother's mind. At the last stop, which was a spinning whirligig on an old, run down hostel, is when Jenny finally understands the journey. Her grandmother explained that she wanted to see all these special things in her life, before she died. The whirligig gave her and Jenny a message that not everyone is evil, and when people died in the Holocaust, they would have wanted the people that learned of them to spread joy and happiness, instead of grieving over their losses. She describes how the person who made the "wind toy" was of good spirit and intentions, and that life is just too precious to waste.…
