Where Do We Go From Here
Where Do We Go From Here?
Mark 1:12-13

Delivered on October 30, 2014 at 12th District Fall Convocation
Bishop Samuel L. Green, Sr.

Long Version
As I close, I can hear Jairus, the synagogue ruler, asking this same question “Where do we go from here”? His question was birthed from his desperation, because his baby daughter was about to die, she would never experience a prom, or graduate from college.

[I don’t know if she was dying because she was a little black girl who may have been walking in Sanford with skittles and iced tea, or if her music was too loud in Jacksonville, or if she was coming from the corner store in Ferguson…]

But in the moment of desperation, Jesus heads to the location of his house. I’m glad this evening, that Jesus will stop by the house and come and see about you…

It’s at the location, that Jesus sets expiration on their mourning. Jesus says, “The child is not dead. She’s only sleeping”. What they considered as fatal, Jesus sees as fruitful.

Then Jesus gives her protection by taking her by the hand and saying “Daughter, Arise”. For the hand of God protects me, it lifts me, comforts me, and secures me! I need his hand.

Lord had given them their daughter free of cost whereas the Indians told her she would have to buy her for no less than twenty pounds. Mary was filled with gratitude after having her children near her. The Rowlandson’s then moved around where Mary states, her God went with her and provided for her through their benevolent friends. She tries to convince herself that after receiving everything she could ask for she was content with life. However Mary mentions she was not at peace. “I can remember the time, when I used to sleep quietly without workings in my thoughts, whole nights together, but now it is the other ways with me.” This sentence again opposes her perspective of remaining thankful to God no matter what. “Lord towards us; upon his wonderful power and might, in carrying of us through so many difficulties, in returning us in safety, and suffering none.”(Page 111) Why was she still suffering her, remembering all the awful physical and mental pain she encountered during her capture? Mary Rowlandson in a way tries to stay faithful to her God, trying to avoid all the pain she is going through even after her…

The sons seem to have the same-shaped ideals as their mother. The sons have ideals that they are suffering for their sins by being tortured by the king Antiochus. However, they believe that now that they are paying for their sins that they will go to heaven and be in a better place. The mother sees an afterlife after they all die. By this, she hopes that she will be reconnected with all her sons once again if their Lord is willing. When comparing these ideals to the Hebrew bible, they both differ majorly. In the Hebrew Bible, they believe in the concept she-ol. She-ol is a place of darkness which all the dead go- the righteous and unrighteous regardless of the choices they made in life. She-ol is a place of darkness and stillness cut off from the Hebrew God. This differs from the Hebrew Bibles view on she-ol because in 2 Maccabees 7:1-42, we witness Hannah and her Seven Sons being hopeful of an afterlife together. “The effect of this extreme attention to the body in the restoration of this world shows that the tradition of resurrection was not at all obligated to Platonic or any other Greek philosophical thought, although 2 Maccabees was written first in Greek using Greek cultural norms in a variety of ways. The resurrection of the body became a Jewish ideal because is differentiates the oppressed from the…
