"What make us moral"

The Time magazine article "What Makes us Moral" by Jeffrey Kluger is about how the human species acquires the trait we call "morality". In the first part of the article the author discusses the specific reasons which scientists believe are the fundamental reasons that we are moral. These reasons include reciprocal altruism (aka empathy), "oughts" (rules that the group must follow and the community enforces them), and the fear of being shunned. The principal of reciprocal altruism can be basically described as "a favor done today, brings a return favor tomorrow". This principal has been observed not only in humans but also in apes. The author believes that morality is important because it is the only thing that separates us from other animals. In last part of the article the author discusses why we do things that are morally considered wrong and one reason is that sometimes we can't help it, such as when someone is clinically insane. Another reason is that sometimes the individual did not know what he did was considered morally unacceptable in the group he is in. In some people there is actually a physical problem with the brain that causes behavioral changes. The last reason is alienation. a person is alienated from the group, it may become acceptable to act unmorally towards that person since they become "less than human". A good example is the treatment of the Jews in
Nazi Germany. Adolf Hitler alienated the Jews from the German people and convinced them that they were unworthy to be called humans and should be eliminated. The author says "None of this research may make us behave better, not right away at least. But all of it can help us understand ourselves ‐ a

In the essay, “The New Immorality”, Joseph Wood Krutch argues that in today’s time, humans are becoming increasingly immoral creatures. This claim can be exemplified by the behavior of students, teachers, politicians, business people, celebrities, and countless others. Krutch believes that although people claim to be honorable, the majority of their actions say otherwise. People no longer care if the acts they commit are immoral because they often only care if it is beneficial to themselves. As times progresses, the definitions of honor and morality are changing, and not for the better.…

In the article, "Morals without God", expert primatologist Frans De Waal makes an assertion that morality has an evolutionary social structure that has been guided threw continuous experiences learned when socially interacting rather than fundamental principles set forth by a god. De Waal does this by examining the moral behaviors exhibited by humans closely related species in primates. He questions that if animals such as primates can demonstrate moral behaviors such as, reciprocation and empathy, then it is possible morality has a scientific explanation rather than a spiritual one that many religious individuals have said govern our decision making from deciding right from wrong. Using our close relatives primates and examining their moral…

What is it that forms and drives our “moral behaviors”? Are we born with a basic sense of morality or do we develop a set of moral “social codes” to keep society from falling into chaos and anarchy? In her essay “On Morality,” Joan Didion dissects what lies beneath the surface of humanity’s morality. By recounting several stories and historical events, she shows that morality at its basic “most primitive level” is nothing more than “our loyalties to the ones we love,” everything else is subjective.…

In life, a person with morals is usually very ethical and has high values and strong religious beliefs. These people know right from wrong and prefer to do what they think is right in any given situation. This is what morality is, having the knowledge to know right from wrong. In Dr. Ben Carson’s America the Beautiful, he states that this nation, The United States of America, was founded with the concept of morality in mind. He also arrives at many notable points concerning the concept of morality in American Society and History. These points include: decisions based on status, slavery, the treating of immigrants, and family values and education.…
