The strength of emotion gives an idea of the writing done throughout the 1800’s (Romantic Era). Writes used nature to give a sense of connection that narrators had with their loves. Although the connection with nature was stronger than the narrator would develop with an actual person. This kind of writing helped understand the feelings and thoughts these authors had.
“The Story of An Hour” is a short story written by Kate Chopin in 1894. The story is about a young woman, Louise Mallard, who is introduced as being “afflicted with heart trouble”. Her sister therefore has to be careful with breaking the news about her husband’s death. When Louise is first told she locks herself in the room to mourn. As she sits there she starts to feel a spirit come upon her like she was freed. Once this is happens, Mr. Mallard shows up appearing to be alive. The shock from this then killed her. This story shows a different things that were going on in the 1800s. This was the time of the Industrial revolution. Mr. Mallard was said to be killed in a railroad accident. A telegram was the easiest way to give news at the time. The story does not give an exact reason to why she felt this feeling of freedom. We can guess that it was because she had a miserable marriage. So she felt a sense of freedom to do things her way in life. Therefore she died of shock when she saw that her husband was well and alive.
