What Is The Power Of Privilege At Youtube
The Privilege activity is so impressive to me. Because I have never pay attention to my privilege and think I have any privilege. So, I think I will stand at the back of the line, but I turn out standing at the middle of the line. Some classmates, I think they would stand at the front of me because their first language is English and I think they have better privilege than me, but they actually stand behind me because of social problems like family. I watched a video named “The Power of Privilege at YouTube”, the speaker is Tiffany Jana. She said she is a black woman but her appearance doesn’t look like it because her family history. She mentioned she doesn’t notice Martin Luther King Jr. in the center of her family picture but only her grandfather.

With only taking one look at this historical picture I figured out that it was Ruby Bridges. The first African American who attended an elementary school for white kids at Lousiana. It is impressive what this young and innocent girl did, going to school while avoiding all the criticism. In this picture, we can observe a terrified infant walking with a small bag escorted with three U.S. marshals. The face of the child evokes angst, torment, and anguish. We can witness how she walks down the stairs towards the white crowd, while they scream and shout racist comments. Meanwhile, the other men walking with her, seem serious. By dressing a black suit and their businesslike face, they demonstrate supremacy. I can not tell if they are angry about…

I had not been aware of Nell Irvin Painter before this video. As the video began I thought it was going to be a white talking about the history of history of white people. I was surprised to see an African-American women talking to what I saw, a mostly white crowd, about the history of white people. I was taken back for a moment because I was confused on how an African-American women could talk about and relate to the history of white people but then as the video progressed I began to realize she was referring to more than being white or the concept of whiteness, Because she was addressing the characterizations of the lighter-skinned people we call white today.…

I read the article “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” by Peggy McIntosh. After reading this article I felt that she was able to identify with people of color because she is a woman. Men have more advantages than women do; white people have more advantages than colored people do. I really liked how she compared the two but also said that they are different. This helps a person that has no idea of what privilege is to understand the concept better. She mentioned in her article that she has many advantages that she has never really looked at until she started writing her article.…

Both Ruth and James, while still haunted with the injustices faced, have come to grips with their heritage, which has made them who they are. While, I personally can’t imagine the hardships that a multi-racial person faced not long ago in our country’s history, I can admire and appreciate the immense difficulty and struggle that a person has between two different groups of people that they love. While things in terms of racial and religious discrimination are less out in the open as they were just decades ago and progress has been made, people still face the injustices of being treated differently simply because they don’t look like the predominant group in a society. James McBride’s memoir shows that regardless of race or religion we are all people and we all have the same feelings and desires in life and that while being of multi-racial background may have been seen as a detriment to him in the past, it appears to me that it has enriched his life and made him a very strong willed…

As I entered homeroom, I noticed I was the only latina present and that there was only one other person of color. At first this did not bug me, but as the week went by, I realized that we were the only two non-white students in the whole middle school. This made me feel very out of place, because I had never been the only Latina at a school, so I did anything I could to fit in. I was willing to let people make me their own personal dictionary, for inappropriate language, or to translate their readings. As a person of color, I was always taught to put others before me or else I would be seen as rude and uneducated, so I complied. Throughout my life, I have witnessed that many upper class citizens take their privilege for granted; they do not…

As a child I believed that someone’s physical appearance made them “different” from the next person, but that is not true. I could list plenty of things that describe my physical aspects as an African-American female. My skin is brown , my hair is kinky, and my lips are full. Unfortunately, those characteristics does not technically make me “different” from any other African-American female. Diversity can refer to someone's economic or geographical background, religion, and even their sexual orientation. In this manner, being African-American did not make me who I am, but being who I am made me African-American. People see me as an African-American female, but I am more than that. I am African-American. I am a female. I am homosexual.…

The ‘Ethnic Notions’ video helped to broaden my understanding of the depictions of black Americans during the era of slavery and post emancipation. Caricatures of black Americans portrayed them as jolly people, who enjoyed serving others full-time, with little to no time for themselves. Because this was the way in which they were portrayed by society, whites truly believed that they were that way.…
