What Is The 1584 Expedition Of Roanoke Island
The 1584 expedition having determined Roanoke Island to be a favorable location for the first English colony in North America, seven English vessels with 600 soldiers and sailors began their voyage from England to the Outer Banks in April, 1585.

Under the command of Sir Richard Grenville, the fleet encountered a storm in the Atlantic, damaging ships and destroying one, forcing a stop in Puerto Rico for repairs. The delayed and hobbled vessels arrived at Roanoke Island on June 26th.

The stop in Puerto Rico had caused conflict between Grenville and Ralph Lane, an Irishman appointed governor of the new colony. Lane believed that Grenville’s delay in Puerto Rico, which involved privateering and trading as well as repairs to the damaged fleet,

Raleigh eventually gained approval from the royal crown to delegate an English colony in the unfamiliar land. Seven ships- and two flagships- departed from England on April 9, 1585. In total, there were 500 hundred men, including Manteo and Wanchese. Months thereafter passed and on June 26, 1585, the ships landed a mere 80 miles southwest of Roanoke. Unaware of the treacheries to navigate around the alien world, the Tiger, one of the quainter ships, ran aground and a generous portion of the cargo was lost. Once the seven ships ultimately dropped anchor into the shallow water surrounding the island, the Indians had no advanced emotions towards the English. Earlier in the year, the tribes witnessed and entire solar eclipse, a comet upon the return…

There are many theories on what happened to Roanoke the Lost Colony. That they went underground, settled at a different place, tried to go back home but there’s only one that could’ve happened to them. When John Smith left to go back to England and returned three years later with no people to come back to except for “CROATOAN” carved into a tree. I believe that the English used the buildings to make boats, that there was no war with the Native Americans, and that they sailed to Croatoan.…

After the colonist got there and set up their camp White had to make another trip back to England. From the story, “The Lost Colony of Roanoke Island (Killed by Indians, Disbanded, or Abducted by Aliens) it said, “A trip he intended to last 6-8 months...it was almost 3 years before White was able to return.” During the time White was gone the colonist on the island ran out of the supplies White was suppose to bring back, and could not get them from the island because the island was going through a drought. From, “The Colonist Starved to Death or Were Lost At Sea” it said, “This drought persisted of 3 years, from 1587 to 1589, and is the driest 3 year episode in the entire 800 year reconstruction.” So it was possible the colonist had to leave Roanoke in search of supplies.…

He was forced to stay in Europe for 3 YEARS! Finally he sailed back to Roanoke with supplies, but when he got there he didn't see any evidence of the colonies existence! Not one nail scrap or bead was left. John White spent the next 5 years searching the island for his family. He only found 3 clues which were a neatly piled skeleton, the word KRO carved into a tree, and the word Croatoan carved into a fence. The only explanation that makes sense is that the native Americans from the nearby tribe Algonquians were "determined to resist the English who were settling on their land" (All Colonist were killed by Indians) and they wanted to fight back also because the original 100 settlers burned the natives crop fields! After killing the settlers, the indians would have had plenty of time to loot all of the villages supplies. This explanation explains that "there were colonist friendly natives called the croatoans which explains the word carved into the fence." (All colonist were killed by Indians) and the letters KRO carved into the tree. "The Croatoans went to war around the time the settlers came" and you can tell that the pile of bones was a warning to either the Croatoans or the Algonquians to stay away. Overall The theory that The settlers were killed by Indians is the best…

What I think would have most likely happened in the Roanoke settlement was the settlers died from diseases and famine that started to spread. They weren't prepared for any of these events and they were running low on supplies they needed. They would then be buried and had the word "Croatoan" carved into the tree as paying tribute to their lives in a way. A second possibility is that the settlers decided to move in with the tribe, as the tribe are not hostile and had no hard feelings to them. And the land around them was peaceful and had plenty of natural resources around them to live off of. They would also form an agreement that, in exchange for goods and welfare, they would be welcomed to the tribe. They'd learn about each other's cultures,…

The original colonists arrived at Jamestown on three ships: The Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery. In the movie the colonist, including John Smith, came to Jamestown on The Susan Constant and the other two ships were not present. During the Voyage of 1607, John Smith was not the captain of the ship; Captain Newport was the admiral and fleet commander. In the movie, the governor of the English Colony was Ratcliffe, and he was in charge during the voyage; however, the colony did not have a governor for the first couple of years, but had a council with a president. John Smith was not elected president of Jamestown Virginia until 1608.…
