Fear can be helpful in many ways. It can help by offering restraint and it can suppress irrational acts. An example is driving past the red light. As the light turns from yellow to red you think of stepping on it, but the fear of receiving a ticket stops you from speeding. Fear can be useful, but it can also be damaging. A disadvantage of fear is that it can lead to paranoia which then leads to obsession. Obsession is dangerous as seen in the three stories written by Edgar Allen Poe. The first story “Tell-Tale Heart”, it's about a man that obsesses about a creepy eye. The “Pit and the Pendulum” is about a man that’s stuck in a prison and is faced with many extremely difficult obstacles. Finally, the “Masque of Red Death” is about a prince named Prince Prospero that fears the red death and so locks himself and his friends from the outside world. In the all of the three stories, Poe uses symbol, irony, and imagery to inform us on how fear can deceive your rational thoughts and the outcome of the trick.…

Theodore Roosevelt once said, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” What is fear? Fear can be a noun or a verb. In the noun form, it is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. In the verb form, it is to be afraid of someone or something that is dangerous, painful, or threatening. If one person looks into fear, then that person becomes feared. But imagine a whole society or community looking into fear. The fear not only gets larger as it spreads, but it also gets more fearful than it already is. The power of fear can be displayed in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and in Ronald Oakley’s “The Great Fear”. As fear moves on from one mind to the next, it leaves the victim panicked and paranoid about everything that revolves around him or her. This “symptom” is known as hysteria. In The Crucible, the hysteria greatly affected the people of Salem. As well as “The Great Fear”, the whole world was in chaos and turmoil due to mass hysteria. The consequences that followed were innocent people became accused and were persecuted (affected victims), self control and limits to go out of hand (people behaved hysterically), unjustified trials and judgments or accusations to be declared (pressures), and superiors to become defied (misuse of power).…

Aristotle believed courage to be the most important quality in a man. “Courage is a mean with regard to fear” (Aristotle). Courage is the willingness to act in spite of fear. Courage is not the absence of fear; it requires fear. As a human being, fear is part of everyday life. Without the concept of the fear, courage wouldn’t exist.
