When learning about culture diversity, I thought I knew everything there was about it. Well to be honest I never knew the half of things, when it came to what all the different cultures went through here I was amazed at how people acted. While studying the many different cultures, I learned that people treated people poorly because of their color, beliefs, and political views. Diversity is an important part of American culture. Cultural diversity has helped to shape the way we live everyday as well as the different foods we eat. What really thought me about diversity is that it is not limited just too racial or ethnic groups but other minority groups. The new information I have learned about diversity still has not changed my views. I think it is important to learn about others cultures and backgrounds. Without knowledge about other cultural groups we would only have stereotypes to go off of. Stereotypes without proper knowledge can lead to discrimination or prejudices.…

The diversity in the United States has helped me to better understand and relate to others in ways that I may not have in the past. I have learned much from this class and about myself that there is still discrimination and prejudice in the United States. I have learned that I need to take the time and to get to know a person before I make any judgments against them. There are so many different kinds of people in the United States with the different backgrounds. We do not need to discriminate against anyone until we can look at ourselves first to make sure we are clean. We need to look beyound the core of there skin and what they are wearing, and the way they talk. Since this class I have steped back and looked around to see how people act with each other some get along just fine then you have the few that you can tell are uncomfortable. I have learned that everyone needs to be treated as equals it does not matter what your age, race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or disability. We just need to all get along and to educate others.…

There is much about diversity in the United States that I have learned about but there is much that I have yet to encounter. There are many things that have also been brought to my attention or have been more so recognized in my eyes. We all have an understanding of what goes on or what is involved in our country but we rarely are aware of all the details of what goes on with each group. The complexity of each group has its own unique characteristics that have impelled me to understand and to better relate and accept other groups as a part of society.…

The more exposed a population is to foreign ideas and people, the more that population becomes desensitized to any stereotypes or prejudices. If we look at African Americans in present day America, their condition is the best that it has ever been in this country’s history mainly because newer generations of Americans are more racially tolerant than generations past. With each new generation will come even more racial and cultural tolerance because exposure with these generations to cultural diversity will be higher as the future unfolds. Webster’s dictionary defines diversity as, “the condition of being different: variety.” The United States of America is very diverse. We have had some influential people that have helped steer us in the ways that we know diversity today. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was very influential in changing the way many white Americans looked at African- Americans during the 1960’s. Long before Dr. King marched on Selma, Alabama and gave his “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington, D.C., Abraham Lincoln tried to change the culture of America by freeing the slaves in 1865 with the Emancipation Proclamation. However, one hundred years later, African-Americans still did not have the same rights as white Americans. They could not ride in the front of the bus, enter the same door of a restaurant, drink from the same water fountain, or attend the same schools as whites. Because of Dr. King’s determination and leadership, the culture of America began to change. In 2008, we saw the greatest example of this change with the election of the first African-American President of the United States, Barack Obama.…

America means diversity. The fact that there is not even an official language, reminds us that this country throughout history has been shaped by immigrants from all over the world. As consequence, diversity lead us to judge and have stereotypes. Like animals, we label consider fellow human beings as non-part of our group. When we think we do not belong to our group, we reject and trend to deny their conditions and human dignity. History is a cruel teacher that shows us how it has come to violent movements such as genocide, deaths, and the extermination of the ones considered different.…
