What Is Catholic Counter-Reformation Art
1.) Catholic Counter-Reformation art describes the style of Christian art, which was a response to Martin Luther’s revolt against Rome. This style was supposed to revitalize Catholic congregation across Europe, hoping to minimize the effects of the Protestant revolt. The church began to commission new architecture, altarpiece art (oil painting), inspirational church fresco painting and sculptures.
2.) The shift of style with art was heavily encouraged by the Catholic Church, which used it to communicate religious themes, war imagery, and aristocrats. Artists at this time focused on depicting natural images, intense emotions and movement through light and shadows. It was simplistic and melodramatic in order to glorify the church.

    Originating in Italy in the 17th and 18th century, Baroque art quickly spread to Europe, North America and South America. Baroque art showed mingled emotion with high volumes and large structures. One of the largest influences was religion, which also helped with the success of this type of artwork. (Cannon, 2002) Supported by the Catholic Church during a time when Protestantism was growing, and gave a dramatic flair to the Catholic faith when represented in art. Many of the Baroque subjects were representative of Biblical characters and stories. Rich color pallets coupled with the exaggeration of light and shadows allowed the artists to show movement in their works. This movement was often focused upward toward the Heaven.
