The biopsychosocial model describes the concept that biological, psychological, and social factors interact as complex networks that influence one’s health and illness (Suls & Rothman, 2004; Gatchel, 2007). One of the main goals of health psychology is to understand the relationship and interaction between these factors. Health psychologists examine treatment effects on a person’s health by applying interventions that modifies the three factors that comprise the biopsychosocial model (Suls & Rothman, 2004; MacKinnon & Luecken, 2008). Numerous studies and interventions have been designed to improve physical and psychological health based on the biopsychosocial model (cite some of these). Among these interventions, the use of mindfulness-based…
Hargrove, Simon, and Young, discuss how a prosthetic limb can be controlled a persons’ thoughts. In order for the prosthetic to work the patients undergo targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR), Muscle reinnervation redirects nerves from damaged muscle from the amputated limb to the healthy hamstring muscle above the knee. (Hargrove, Simon, and Young, 2013) After the computer program discovers and investigates data from the sensors then sends the signal to the robotic leg to perform the action the patient is trying to do. The computer programmers found that it is safer to use muscle signals than it is to use robotic signals.…
As scientific and medical findings advance it is becoming more apparent that everything we feel, think, and do is just controlled through biochemistry within our bodies. Professor Daryl Davies’ research has shown that, although we know drugs influence the body in certain ways by stimulating certain receptors, the full extent that the body can be controlled is yet to be discovery. This interests me because in the future there may just be a pill to fix anything that is considered wrong with the…
The ability to put oneself in someone else's shoes is fundamental to human characteristics. Through friendship, this can be taken to the next level. The University of Virginia put out of study of brain activity. The group scanned twenty-two different people who were warned of receiving a small electrical shock to one of three options: themselves, their best friend, or a stranger. Through this study, scientists have learned that the brain activity of the person in danger, versus the friend, is essentially the same. James Coan, director of the study, stated that,…

The four psychological treatments for physical disorders are relaxation training, biofeedback, meditation, and hypnosis. Relaxation training is how one is taught to relax their muscles at any given point and time. One can experience a reduction in feelings of anxiety (Comer, 2011). Biofeedback is where one is connected to machinery that gives them continuous readings about their involuntary body activities (Comer, 2011). Meditation…
If you read the latest edition of the Thrive, you noticed there is a new biofeedback provider ready to help individuals with their stress management. Professionally trained biofeedback provider with over 30 years of teaching experience, I am Karen Robertson. Believing in confidentiality for my clients and not a healthcare provider, I follow HIPAA confidentiality. I believe biofeedback is a good technique to help people learn to manage their stress instead of their stress managing them.…

Many theories have been challenged throughout the history of psychology. Mind vs. Body is one of the most important issues that has formed the basic foundation in this field today. One of the central questions in psychology and philosophy concerns the mind-body problem: Is the mind part of the body, or the body part of the mind? If they are distinct, then how do they interact? And which of the two is in charge? (McLeod, 2007). Philosophers have examined the relationship between the two and have proposed a variety of approaches to support their arguments.…

As the nineteenth century rolled in, members of psychological study started to have a more accurate understanding of the connection between the body and mind. Sigmund Freud was one such forward thinker and he promoted theories that unconscious thoughts of the mind can hold a strong influence on one’s health drawing on the original beliefs of the Greeks (Parsons, 1958).…
Neuroscientists argue that Cognitive Enhancement, is what we may need while another scientist argue that the side effects may be more than what we or the recipient signs up for, what both parties agree on is change of the way we think and function; according to the University of Washington Neuroscience. Studies of the brain have been pursued for centuries, for example, in 387 B.C when Plato spoke about the brain being the “set of mental processes” in Athens or, in 1755 when J.B. LeRoy decided to use electro conclusive therapy as a remedy for mental illnesses, and more recently when the FDA approved the drug Chlorpromazine to be used in 1950. Throughout history the brain has been studied and strengthened to make living smoother and introduce new theories to enhance the field of neuroscience. While both parties hold strong arguments, one may believe that the development and use of brain enhancements are beneficial.…

Occupational therapists use biofeedback for this. “Biofeedback training teaches people to control certain body functions they do not normally think about controlling. For example, a headache sufferer could learn to raise the temperature of a part of the body, say the hands. Redirecting blood to the hands reduces blood flow in the head, and the headache pain eases.” (Trust, n.d.)…
This field of study closely examines the relationship between the body and the mind. It studies the impacts of internal factors on bodily processes. It combines knowledge from psychology, psychiatry, neurology, biology and psychoneuroimmunology 1. It investigates to what degree the psyche influences the body. It is not solemnly human affair, for example experiments showed that rats react to certain mental stimulus similarly like men.…
