What I Learned In Carolyn Kalil's True Colors
College is the place to find yourself. I am only a month into my college tenure and I have already begun to learn more about myself here than I had in my 18 years prior. I have learned so much through Carolyn Kalil’s True Colors Personality Quiz, The Learning Styles Inventory and Learning Styles Descriptions by Solomon and Felder, and The Reading/Learning Process in Chapter One of A Brief Guide to Writing from Readings by Stephen Wilhoit. The True Colors Personality Quiz has taught me that I am more adventurous and restless than serious and punctual. The Learning Styles Inventory and Learning Styles Descriptions has taught me that I am a reflective, sensing, visual, learner. This is true, because I love movies like The Notebook, Walk the Line, and Atonement. Carolyn Kalil’s True Colors Personality Quiz has taught me that I am more adventurous and restless than serious and punctual. The Learning Styles Inventory and Learning Styles Descriptions by Solomon and Felder has taught me that I am a reflective, sensing, visual, learner. As a reflective learner, I prefer to learn by myself at first to make sure that I understand the material. It is also extremely hard for me to get through a lecture where all I do is take notes. I am not able to sit and memorize the material, I have to read the information over and over again. I also like being able to get up and do things during class. I am also a sensing learner, which means that I like learning the clear cut facts and solving problems with the best given method. In high school, I was best at history, because it was memorizing facts. There were no theories that would hinder my learning process. I also liked calculus, because I was able to solve the problems with the best given methods and I could do them step by step. The best way for me to learn is to relate the material to the real …show more content…
Visualization is a key tool for being a visual learner. I am able to learn best when I am able to look at a picture or a graph. Unfortunately, many of my college courses so not provide visuals, so in order to succeed I have to find other ways to study. I can help myself by making color-coded notes or even by making boxes around information that I have to know. The Learning Styles Inventory and Learning Styles Descriptions by Solomon and Felder has taught me that I am a reflective, sensing, visual, learner. The Reading/Learning Process in Chapter One of A Brief Guide to Writing from Readings by Stephen Wilhoit has taught me to find a definition and purpose, ask questions, and take notes. I never like to write academic papers, especially if I don not know why I am writing it. If there is at least some sense of a purpose then I might be inclined to do the assignment well. I understand that the purpose of this assignment is to summarize what we have learned about ourselves while we have been here, so I was inclined to write this paper! I have learned that it is good to ask questions. It is encouraged that I ask questions to make sure that I understand the assignment or reading so I can do

When meeting a group of new students it is important to find out each student’s particular learning style, this is so I can meet the learning needs of each student individually. Learning styles are individual’s natural pattern of acquiring and processing information in learning situations. There are many models of learning styles David Kolbs, Peter Honey and Alan Mumford, Anthony Gregorc and Neil Flemings VAK are some of the most popular. I found out that I am auditory learner, rather than a visual or kinaesthetic learner. This means that I prefer and will work more efficiently through instructions and orders by my teachers or peers. It also means that I am quite able to remain focussed and attentive whilst I am being told what to do. After completing the learning style assessment, the results revealed that I am a visual learner. My score was the highest in the visual category. These are the characteristics of a visual learner: They have strong visualization skills and they can look up (often up to the left) and “see” the information invisibly written or drawn. To add, they are able to make movies in their mind about information previously read and give vivid details. They have visual spatial skills such as sizes, shapes, texture, angles, three-dimensional depths are strong. Also, they have a keen sense of the aesthetics, the beauty of physical environment visual media, or art. I learn better by seeing graph, and charts in my notes or color coding for organization of information. Certainly, these…

I want to challenge my fears of social interaction with the burgeoning environment of college. The close-knit community melded within the honors dorms will force me to crack open my shell. In order to thrive, I must embrace my independence; avoiding thoughts of self-doubt or distrust. My Grandmother has always told me that my professional goals can only be reached with a procurement of the self. An undeveloped sense of self can hinder one's abilities to look towards the future. I aim to develop the aspects of my personality that I find the most advantageous, such as my creativity, my compassion, my strength, and my determination. The honors college will become the catalyst in my journey towards self-confidence, independence, and the embracement of my own creativity within the field I…

Everyone is completely different with how they intake information and their learning skills. My best learning skill is Kinesthetic I am more a “hands on” learner. I took the learning style quiz to determine what my learning style is. I was not surprised when it came back stating I was a visual learner. As a visual learner I remember what has been written down, even if I don’t read it more than once. I like to write things down and pay attention to lectures if I watch them. That way I can stop them and take notes and rewind if necessary. That is why I enjoy online learning. If I were in a typical classroom setting I would have to write down everything on the chalkboard. To succeed in COL 112 I print the instructions so I can read them and highlight the important points. For example, I printed the Learning Styles lesson so I would have a “visual” of the quiz and mark my answers on the paper and then answer them online.…
