What Does The White Symbolize In The Great Gatsby

who would have ever thought that simple colors could have so much meaning in almost every aspect?) Authors often use color symbolism in their writing to show a deeper meaning ,often these colors associate with a particular feeling of object, or to portray a character. Fitzgerald is no different in his work, “ The Great Gatsby,” it is obvious that Fitzgerald uses a multitude of color references in his writing. For example, the color white is mainly used to show innocence, purity and class. Since the very beginning of the story,white is being use to describe the grandiose house that Tom and Daisy live in, immediately associating the color with the high way of life they lived. In addition to this, in the story it mentions “The idea is that if we don't look out the white race will be...utterly submerged.” By the “white race” Tom Is referring to a set of upper class that inherited their money, who are commonly known as “old money, ” the fact that white is being able to describe this old social class is evident of its meaning in this novel. Yet again, when the women were having their inconsequential conversation on (page 12) the use of white is to portray class, and leisure. Fitzgerald uses white here to show how easy these women have it and don't ever have to work a day , because they can have inconsequential conversations as ”cool as their white dresses.”
