What Does The Rosebush Symbolize In The Scarlet Letter
Hawthorne uses sunshine, the rosebush, and the forest to add an immense amount of symbolism throughout this dynamic novel. Hawthorne’s use of symbolic objects in nature play a huge role in this novel. He uses these objects to bring creativity to the story. His use of symbolism makes the reader really think about these ordinary objects and what they mean in the novel. He uses a writing technique that takes these objects and totally changes their meaning. Hawthorne takes the reader to a whole other level as they think about these plain, boring objects and try to piece together what they mean. For the Puritan’s the forest was seen to be evil. Every time they heard of the forest, a sense of fear and nervousness would enter their body. The Puritans were scared of the forest because of the evil, black, eerie figure that was said to haunt the forest and anybody who entered it, the Black Man. The Black Man is used to symbolize the devil. The Black Man wanders around the forest carrying a large book where the people who have committed awful sins have written their names in blood. This interpretation of the symbolic meaning of the forest is used to represent fear. At first the forest is used to represent the unknown, it is full of terrifying people and creatures that the townspeople do not want to encounter. In the beginning the forest is very cruel but that changes throughout the story. Once the people realize what the forest is actually about they use it to escape from the real world. It is used to bring relief to the people who walk in it. It is used to get away from the world. Here in the forest nobody will not judge you, you do not have to feel bad about yourself. It is a place to escape from your mistakes and sins. Here you can be who you want to be without being judged.
