Welcome Address
[Letter to Reader Example]

June 1, 2008

Welcome! My name is Sally Student and I am a senior at Thomas Jefferson High School. This portfolio is a representation of my academic progress at Thomas Jefferson over the last four years. I’ve included a list of my achievements, a resume and letters of recommendation, my WASL scores, and high school transcripts in my portfolio. I’ve also included a summary of my plans for after high school and a few of my favorite projects from my years at Thomas Jefferson. While I was at Thomas Jefferson, I enjoyed Drama and English classes and sang in the school’s Concert Choir. I also took two years of Spanish through my school’s foreign language program. Outside of academics, I played tennis for Thomas Jefferson and my tennis partner and I were number one doubles for Thomas Jefferson my senior year. I began volunteering at the local elementary school as a math and reading tutor in my junior year and have since developed a love for working with and teaching elementary school students. This summer I am traveling with my church to Mexico to help build houses for needy families. I think this experience will help me improve my Spanish speaking ability and allow me to interact with people of a different cultural background. I am looking forward to this opportunity to give back and improve the lives of others. After I graduate from Thomas Jefferson, I plan to pursue my love for teaching at Western Washington University in Bellingham where I hope to major in elementary education. I believe that I would make a good teacher because I work well with others and have a knack for inspiring younger children to succeed. I also want to minor in Spanish. This minor and my experience in Mexico will be useful in the classroom. Eventually I would like to be a third grade teacher and help educate future generations of students. The pieces in the portfolio reflect my past achievements and relevant skills. I’m sure

Those in the healthcare profession are respected, hardworking individuals who went above and beyond to prove themselves capable of helping others in the greatest way possible. My career goals are very straightforward. I’ve taken several steps in high school to accomplish these goals by being well disciplined in my studies, and participating in a Health Careers Internship Program. This program offers me a variety of opportunities that make me a more applicable in a healthcare setting. Furthermore, I believe I belong here at Bethune-Cookman University because it has been invested within me and I am a diamond…

Writing a personal statement is often the most difficult part of the graduate/professional school application process. However, an essay or “personal statement” should always be submitted with your application, even if the school says it is optional. If your qualifications make you a borderline student at a school that makes a point of considering subjective factors in its admission decisions, then your personal statement could make a difference between acceptance and rejection. Writing requirements vary widely. Some programs request only 1 or 2 paragraphs about why you want to pursue graduate study, while others require numerous specific essays. Since personal statements can reveal your character more clearly than other application materials, they provide evidence that you bring something distinctive to the field such as unusual ability, background traits, experience, or a unique way of looking at the world. WHAT TO WRITE Before writing anything, stop and consider what a reader might be looking for; the general directions or other parts of the application may give you some indication. A number things may be evaluated, including: Expectations with regard to the program and career opportunities  Writing ability  Major area of interest  Educational background  Immediate and long-term goals  Reasons for pursuing a graduate/professional degree in a particular field and at a particular institution  Maturity  Personal uniqueness - what you would add to the diversity of the entering class Some schools require specific essays, while others provide no direction at all. There are both advantages and disadvantages to vagueness. Since no specific topic is required, one can write about whatever will do the most good. The drawback of not having a precise topic is that you’ll have to choose your own topic. This choice will probably be difficult to make. Here are a few things to keep in…

    Statement of Purpose

I wasn’t terribly sure what I wanted to do with my life, nor did I have any idea how to get where I thought I wanted to be. My relative lack of passion wasn’t seen as a deterrent in my affluent Texas town, though, as it was a place where nearly all high school students went on to college—it was the only option we really considered or that was presented to us by our families, teachers, and counselors as a post-graduation plan. So I began the requisite search by looking first at nontraditional college environments, for while I had done reasonably well at my large and impersonal public high school, nor had I flourished either. It seemed to me that if I was going to spend the next four years of my life in school, I might as well try a different tactic than the one that had allowed me to coast rather unremarkably through high school.…

    Teacher Assistant

This semester, I decided to do my practicum by giving back and becoming a teacher assistant at Washington Parks Academy. Teacher assistants are people that help teachers with different instructional work using lesson plans and providing support to allow teachers more time for teaching and lesson planning. They do other duties such as, supervising children in the lunchroom, tutoring, and recording grades. I attended this school in my 7th and 8th grade year so it was very rewarding to have the chance to come back and help different elementary students. My adult partner was a 4th grade science teacher by the name of Mrs. Dreyer. She is a graduate from GVSU with a Bachelors in Science, major in Integrated Science, and minor in Elementary education. It was her first year teaching there and she has always liked working with different elementary students. Being a teacher assistant provided some valuable experience for me. As a teacher assistant, my experience included monitoring 4th graders and assisting Mrs. Dreyer in whatever task that needed to be done. The roles and responsibilities that I was given was completing assigned homework problems individually, collecting/distributing sets of examinations or different handouts, and preparing different equipments at the start of class. I was also able to work in the laboratory to make sure that supplies and equipment was in order, preparing and monitoring laboratories, grading assignments, and cleaning up at the end of class.…
