Dylan´s Character Analysis
In the marvelous movie “We Bought A Zoo,” directed by * Cameron Crowe, Dylan Mee goes through life battling his mom’s death and his new home. In the beginning of the movie, Dylan acts very depressed and disturbed. Even though Dylan should’ve been focused on school and his grades he has been focusing on his drawings and his mother instead. In the car ride to school Dylan says ¨Dad. Nobodyś gonna give an F to a kid whose mom died six months ago.¨(Crowe,x;xx). After, that day during school Dylan got expelled from school because he stole a box of cash from the school. His father Benjamin tells Dylan that day¨He expelled you because you stole. You stole! It breaks my heart.¨ (Crowe,x;xx). This marked the new beginning

    During their childhood, Sonny and his brother are trapped in the city of Harlem, a city of drugs and poverty. A city where the community must team up in order to survive, but often fails to come together. The narrator depicts the inescapabilty of Harlem as he brings his brother back to Harlem, “Some escaped the trap, most didn't. Those who got out always left something of themselves behind, as some animals amputate a leg and leave it in the trap” (Baldwin 419). The two brothers were trapped in a life surrounded with pain and discrimination due to the surroundings of Harlem. Sonny is brought back to the environment that he was trying to escape. He is unable to live with the realities of Harlem. His environment engulfs him as he develops a drug habit that many of the characters in the story can relate to. The only way he is able to escape the sufferings of reality is through the use of drugs. His drug use dissolves the inequalities that he faced while in Harlem and as an African American during the period, making them unrecognizable for brief moments.     The strategy of having Sonny's brother tell the story shows us that his attitude and negative feelings and disapproval of his brother changes as the story progresses. The story starts off with Sonny's brother's finding out that Sonny had been arrested for heroin, and his anger and shame is clearly displayed.     The narrator in the story is an algebra high school teacher in Harlem. He is depicted as a decent man who is very obedient to his parents compared to his brother Sonny who never listens. The narrator experiences pain and suffering in his life even though at first he denies it and tries to fit in the middle class in the community. He lives in denial and this makes it impossible for him to understand what pain and suffering really is, and what his younger brother Sonny is going through. He uses his social position to protect himself from the emotional torture he is undergoing. When his daughter dies of polio, he begins understanding his brother and his sympathy for he says, "my trouble, made his real" (Baldwin 139). In his pain, the narrator learns to deal with it through interactions with his family and the people around him, unlike his brother who opts to use heroin.
