Child support is the act of the legal arrangement between a noncustodial parent and the parent who has custody. Child support is financial support paid by the noncustodial parent to the parent who has primary custody. Many factors are considered when setting child support amounts. These can include but aren’t limited to both parents’ financial situations in addition to the following:
Whether or not one spouse is requesting alimony.
The cost of health insurance and/or medical expenses.
The presence of any veteran’s or Social Security benefits.
The receipt of any workers’ compensation.
Income from estates, trust or lottery winnings.
If there are other children in the household.

Issues: In this scenario a student maintained residence in the town of Trenton, a community that does not have a high school. Students from this area are able to enrolled in Ellsworth or MDI high schools, however, due to behavioral issues the student was placed in a more restrictive environment in Bangor (Parent v. Trenton, 1999, p.2). During the spring of the 1998-1999 academic year the student returned home without “notifying the Trenton School Department of the student’s self initiated change in residency/educational placement” (Parent v. Trenton, 1999, p.2). The student was denied enrollment in both of the available high schools due to his/her intended date of enrollment, and failure to pass a background check (Parent v. Trenton, 1999, p.5). Interestingly, the issues addressed in this case do not consider the lawfulness of the schools’ denial for enrollment, but instead focused on Trenton School Department and if it sufficiently provided the student…

The goal of the Child Support Enforcement and Establishment of Paternity Act of 1974 is to compel absent parents to become monetarily accountable for their children. Every state is impacted by the passage of the 1974 Act and the establishment of the federal Office of Child Support Enforcement (OCSE). OCSE is the national agency that requires each state to develop IV-D agencies within their state to oversea and administer a comprehensive child support program. These state agencies provide assistance in locating absent parents by collaborating with their own state Parent Locator Service Agency or the Federal Parent Locator Service (FPLS) which is operated by OCSE. IV-D agencies are also required to establish and enforce child support awards; periodically review awards; and establish paternity. They must provide assistance regardless if families are receiving public assistance or not. The State IV-D agency resources must be utilized first before federal assistance can be authorized. The FPLS will then utilize an assortment of federal databases to trace the absent parent.…
