The War of 1812 was fought between the new and fragile United States against the British Empire, Canadian Provinces and a few Woodland Indian Tribes. The War of 1812 was an attempt by the Americans to establish their dominance in North America by conquest of the British owned Canadian Provinces. With an under supplied and undermanned army and navy the United States managed to scrape up a stalemate with the British. The British, with the defeat of Napoleon, turn back toward the Old World to establish their presence as the greatest empire in Europe. The Treaty of Ghent was signed by both, the British and United States, to agree upon an armistice and return all rightful land and prisoners back to their respective country. The War of 1812 had major effects in the aftermath of the war both domestically and in foreign affairs. The United States, coming off a decent result on land and even more importantly on the seas against the British Empire, gained more respect in the community of European nations. Inside its borders, America had the greatest nationalistic movement it has seen since the forming of the Union. Nationalism boosted the economy, the arts, and transportation. There are many reasons why America was forced to declare war on Britain in 1812. As President Madison stated for the cause to declare war were due to the impressments of U.S. sailors by the British, the blockade of U.S. ports, the British supporting the Indians and as well as the British violating America’s neutral rights. In hopes to keep the neutrality America had tried to not pick sides between warring European countries. Although their goal of remaining neutral was noble it had brought them international derision. Madison and other Republicans came to the conclusion that the only way to restore the viability of American nationhood was through war. Their thinking behind this idea was that if America could not protect itself the ideas it championed such as republicanism and democracy would be scoffed at by the rest of the world. The history book was published in the year 1989 which contains 480 pages. The book was published at the University of Illinois Press and this book is even a Bicentennial edition. Donald R. The period after the War of 1812 is labeled as “Era of Good Feelings” which is accurate culturally but it’s proved economically and socially false. Therefore the idea of the “Era of Good Feelings” only actually applies to the growth of intense nationalism and not the political, social, and economic aspects from 1815 to 1825. Nationalism, which emphasizes the pride a person has for their nation, supported the label “Era of Good Feelings” but sectionalism showed differences in regions and therefore contradicted the label.…

When the US and congress declared war on Great Britain, they may not have realized that their success seemed to be doomed to begin with. There was strong lack of support from American citizens to go to war, this was because of several reasons. After finishing with the concern of France, England turned its attention over to the United States. At first, the United States did not want to resort to war and fighting (Doc. B) but rather sort out their issues economically--because England had seized all ships that did not stop in the British port before heading to their other European destinations, Congress passed the Embargo Act and then the Non-Intercourse Act, allowing trade with all nations except France and England. Then, England refused to allow this trade to occur, so America had to resort to war. The Northeastern Federalists were not in favor of war, but the Republicans ultimately won the majority vote in Congress to declare war--the War of 1812 (Doc. G). One of the causes of the War of 1812 may have been an American desire to annex British Canada in order to stop the Indian raids into the Midwest take Britain from North America, and gain more land. The American victories at the Battle of Lake Erie and the Battle of the Thames in 1813 ended the Indian killings and removed one of the reasons for annexation. The American failure to occupy any significant part of Canada prevented them from annexing it for the second reason, which was largely ended by the Era of Good Feelings that started after the war between Britain and the United States.…
