Walter Younger Family
The Younger family is a poor household trying to survive in Chicago in the 1950s. Although they do not have much money or material items, they have each other, their family, to love and cherish in life. Lena, the head of the household, teaches the value of family over money, but Walter sees money as the most important thing in his life. Walter betrays his mother, Lena, many times throughout the play A Raisin in the Sun by going by what he knows and not what his parents taught him. Controlled by the need for money and his own morals, Walter Younger betrays his mother by refusing to listen to her. In the play, Walter primarily talked about his dream to his family, but they realized the people he chose to be in business with were bad people. Lena told him many times not to invest money into a liquor store because it was a waste of time and he was working with scammers, but Walter chose to go against everything she says and invests in the store. Lena gives Walter the opportunity to use the money in any way he wanted as long as he put it all in the bank first. Walter felt blessed and loved when Lena hands him the money. He promises her he will do as she says, but he immediately turned behind her back and put all he had into a liquor store. The two men Walter worked with took his money and left him behind to feel sorry for himself. Lena felt disappointed when Walter told her what happened, but she forgave him for this betrayal. Walter chose to betray Lena many times for his own personal gain and so show he can live his own way. At the end of the play, he learns to be responsible and is able to stand up for himself the way his mother wanted him to. Walter made many mistakes that affected his family's life in a negative way, but Lena still respects him through her teaching of the importance of family. In the end, Lena sees him change from being disobedient and inconsiderate to a loving and responsible
