Waiting for Godot Essay
Taylor Daneyko
IB English 4
Griffin pd. 5 Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett may be observed as a meaningless play with its sole purpose being humor by some; however, the significance of the literature is open for interpretation. The characters of Estragon and Vladimir are delusional and helplessly waiting for someone, for whom they have absolutely no knowledge of. The setting consists of a country road and merely a tree. The tree is the only distinct object present throughout the two act play; therefore I believe it has a purpose. This lone tree serves as a major symbol of hope, which enlarges the literal meaning of the play. However one interprets Godot can also change how one see’s the tree as a symbol. Throughout the play, Vladimir and Estragon appear hopeless and aloof. Time has no meaning (the characters have faulty memories), and they do not have a purpose in life as we observe, other than to pass the time “waiting for Godot” .There are many biblical references in the play which can directly relate the tree to the crucifixion. It is a theory that Vladimir and Estragon represent the pair of thieves who were crucified on each side of Jesus (one was dammed and the other was saved). In this case, we do not know if either Vladimir or Estragon fits this theory because the fate of their characters is never revealed by the end of the play. In midst of their boredom, the two friends contemplate whether or not to hang themselves from the tree. This can also be viewed as a reference to the crucifix, but it parodies the religious significance. In between Act I and Act II, the tree has sprouted leaves, which is odd because it was completely bare the day before. This highlights the theme of time, and how the characters lack the essence of time. Vladimir observes the tree for a few moments at the beginning of Act II, but he is distracted by Estragon’s entrance. The two never mention or discuss the obvious change in the tree, even though they spent the entire day before next to the same tree. They are not aware of the life they have, or the meaning of being an individual.
The sprouting of the tree represents rebirth and life; it emphasizes the theme of hope. It is suiting that Vladimir and Estragon do not notice the change because they have not gained any knowledge as to why they are waiting and who for, which adds irony to the play. Could Beckett be using Vladimir and Estragon to represent mankind as a whole? It is possible he chose a simple setting so the audience could relate the play to their own lives. Are you letting life pass you by just waiting for something to happen? Or will you accept that hope is always right next to you (the tree) and act upon it?
Waiting for Godot is a literary work that can be interpreted in a substantial amount of ways. The importance of symbolism in any piece of writing was surely brought to my attention while studying this play. The plot would not have as much substance without the tree because it is the only object in the setting, and it would be more difficult to connect the many religious references. All in all, the tree serves as an imperative symbol throughout Waiting for Godot, which allows the audience to create their own analyses of Beckett’s work.

Nomads were wanderers that had no technical home. Four groups of nomads were the Turks, Afghan and Seljuk, the Vikings, the Mongols, and the Huns. When the Mongols went to Europe, they brought the Bubonic Plague; they caused the reunification of the Russians, and helped start Pax Mongolica. They allowed the conquered to keep their ways of life and religions as long as they obeyed the foreign rulers. The decentralization of Japan and Western Europe was helpful and a hindrance by being more organized, using feudalism and causing more chaos.…

The book of Proverbs is a book that can provide us with wisdom and knowledge for effective every day living. Proverbs supply wisdom for all people regardless of their age, sex or position in society. God wants his people to be wise and informed with quality applications for a successful and blessed lifestyle. An attribute to possess in order to obtain great wisdom on diligence and laziness is first we must have the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 1:7 states “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” According to that verse the fear of the Lord is an attitude of respect toward God, which means we do not want to displease God. In order to not displease God’s word in the book of Proverbs we must be willing to accept and try and live our life according to the wisdom that he has provided. While different ages are momentous in the United States, when a person turns twenty-one it seems as if the person is definitely ready to enter the real world. A twenty-one year old step’s into the real world of grownups, accounting, and a legal drinking limit. A twenty first birthday is very special, as is someone’s sixteenth and eighteenth birthday. Both poems by Samuel Johnson and A.E. Housman demonstrate a person turning twenty-one, but both poems demonstrate different views on how the speaker and the audience feel. “To Sir John Lade, on His Coming of Age” is about the speaker telling his audience on how he feels about finally turning twenty-one. “When I Was One-and-Twenty” describes a young adult listening to an elder or someone they look up too about their new age. Both of these poems have a condescending or rude tone while they either talk or listen to the advice that they are given.…

    Waiting for Godot Analysis

STRUCTURE: The play has been divided into two acts but the location for the acts is one through out the play, ‘A country road, a tree’ the only thing that changes in the play is the time of the day. In the two acts there are four identical sections that go as follows: Vladimir and Estragon arrive and wait, Pozzo and Lucky come and leave, then a messenger arrives and leaves leaving Vladimir and Estragon by themselves again. Due to this repeat in the structure of the play it can be said that waiting for Godot is a perfectly parallel play. The fact is that Act 2 ends in the same way as Act 1 and that means that if there were to be another Act it would too end in the same manner, because the truth is that Godot will never show up throughout the play giving it a very repetitive structure. Even though the structures of the acts are repeated but what happens in those act haven’t been repeated. In Act 1 Vladimir and Estragon are both waiting for…
