How To Play Volleyball!

Imagine you are in a dark, deserted, brick alleyway. A night owl hoots in the distance. Your phone just died and you are ten miles away from home. You are bored out of your mind because you cannot think of anything to do. Zing! A motorcycle coughing black smoke streaks by, but does not notice you. No one is walking by because the dingy, damp alleyway you are stranded in is not a place anyone wants to be. It is so quiet you could hear a pin drop. If you have a ball, you could play volleyball with the wall, but only if you know how. In this situation, you would wish with all your heart that you knew how to play volleyball. You can learn how by using my challenging, but accurate process to bump, underhand serve, and

I signed up for volleyball. I have only had two practices. Hitherto, I acquired the skills of passing the ball, serve overhand, and set the ball. I failed to attend the first practice. As a result, I do not know how to properly serve underhand. Practice is every Friday night from six “o” clock to six forty-five at Anderson Farm Park. Moreover drills, we play games. One game I relish is where a person serves the ball to the other side of the net and tries to hit someone. If they are not successful, they have to sit were the ball landed. If they do strike someone, they earn a point. Volleyball is an enjoyable experience.…

Where you are can explain who you are. Why you are in a particular place and how you got there tell an outside observer about your decisions and the inferred motives behind those decisions. In “Ex-Basketball Player,” John Updike introduces a character whose surroundings emulate his success in life: Flick Webb. Flick’s momentary success did not remain later in his life. Because setting partially defines a person, Updike uses it, along with tone and irony to remind readers that success is as fickle as humans themselves.…

Today is Friday, how I’m so thankful it is. If I’m lucky, I’ll get two days of peace from all this drama. No one just seems to leave me alone, not that it’s any different than before the locker incident, but it just seems as though the bullying as gotten worse. I haven’t talked to Andy since Monday, Vanessa is gone most of the time, -probably with her lover- and Angela doesn’t seem to bother me. What I’m really grateful for, is that I haven’t seen Meghan or Eleena lately, it could be because I avoid all public places, but still. I would’ve expected them to hunt me down, but they seem to not be around.…

In this paper I will describe the head to toe mechanics of what a normal, athletic volleyball block consists of. This movement may seem simple when watching a player perform it on the court; however it is a very complex muscular movement. There will be three phases I will explain in this movement. First the athletic position or “start phase”, next the jumping motion or “active phase” and finally will be the landing known as the “ending phase”. I will be describing every motion, as well as what plane the muscles are moving in and whether the movement is isometric, concentric or eccentric.…

For as long as I remember, I have been raised with a basketball hoop. This hoop stood firmly, looking down at the trees secured by patches of cement in my backyard, in my neighborhood, Dorchester. This hoop was my center of faith and tranquility surrounded by gunfires, shattering windows, car alarms. As a girl, I learned not to adventure any place else other than this hoop because going beyond its faded lines on the concrete is an unknown world full of hazards and danger. And when I did cross these seraphic lines, I could sense the bittersweet emotions running throughout the neighborhood, my home.…

Growing up, I was never naturally athletic and very injury prone. Regardless of these issues, I always remained determined and strived to accomplish my goals. As I enter high school one of my main goals was to make the varsity tennis team. During my freshmen year I practiced every day for the first 3 months of school hoping that I could just make the team. Unfortunately I tore a ligament in my wrist for the second time which prevented me from practicing till right before the tennis season started. I ended barely making the JV team which was very disappointing, but it only motivated me for next year. In my heart I knew that I if I was determined enough I could play varsity next year on my own merit. As I progressed through the sophomore year,…

“Side out, side out!” “You got this!” The crowd’s roaring chant sounded like a broken record on full blast. All of a sudden, my ears deafen, my heart racing, my hands moist and my throat dry. Perspiration slowly trails down my face as I glance at the scoreboard. The score reads 17-18. My team, SF Tremors 13-1 has been going back and forth with Texas team Magic for more than an hour. Both teams won one set, and now Magic is in the lead by one point. This is such a long and exhausting game! I think frantically, talking to myself, focus Ella, focus. I try locking my tired eyes on the tall, chubby server but the towering middle blocker with wingspan of an eagle and outside blocker enhanced biceps were partially blocking my view. The girl serves a powerful topspin jump-serve towards Karlee, but the short, lightning quick defensive specialist dives forward to pass the ball. It was a perfect pass, going directly to the petite hands of our skilled setter, Erica. She sets me on zone 4.…

The vibration of the basketball hitting the ground is the best feeling the world. Light was shining through the humongous windows onto the worn out gym floor like a flash light. I joined MYB in 5th grade. I wanted more of a competition league after coming from Upward basketball. The first year my team was horrible and everyone went their separate ways after the season. I joined Dave Buffenbarger’s team the following year hoping for a better outcome. A lot of the girls on that team were some of my close friends, and some were not. This was not a problem as we quickly became close. MYB gave me the chance to make new friends through their league and become even closer with my old friends. With a few players always coming and going after each season, I ended up playing for Dave up until my senior year. Being on Dave’s team for so long gave me the chance to grow close to my teammates. Being with my team for many years and…

Whenever I think back to highschool I am always reminded of the fun times I had playing sports. The friendships I built and diciplines I learned still affect my life today. Playing volleyball helped me learn good time management skills especially when I started playing for the local club team. The highschool team was demanding but when club season started that became your life. School, practice, homework, sleep was my weekday schedule. The weekend tournaments didn’t allow for much of a break either. A minimum of 4 matches and if you won the bracket, you could expect atleast 2 more. Putting in hard work and dedicating countless hours wasn’t all for nothing though.…

Diving on the ground to get the ball up, setting the ball outside, and having your hitter slam the ball into the opponents side of the court. That is what volleyball is all about and why I have such a love for the game. I am here to tell you about why this sport is so important to me and also why it plays a very big role in my life. For me when I play it’s about being a team, going out there and showing yourself and the crowd that you know what you’re doing. In the time you are on that court you leave everything behind you and focus on one thing: playing your game no matter the outcome and leaving everything on the floor.…
