Virtual Teen Reflection Paper
There are many different key points discussed in class over this semester, but the five key points I am discussing include; cognitive development, puberty, emotional autonomy, parenting style, and self-esteem. The child I raised in my virtual teen was named Roman and he applied to these key point along with me as the parent with my parenting style. Every parent has different experience with their teen but teenagers can also follow similar development patterns.
Throughout my virtual teen, Roman went through puberty just like an average teenage boy. It was nice Roman did not go through puberty late so he did not have the emotional problems and drug use that sometimes come along with developing late. He started his height growth and Roman started

I always tried to follow the authoritative style. With authoritative the ideal is to be high in demand but also high in responsiveness. Basically, I set high reasonable rules and Roman knows why I have them. I respond and am engaged with my child and being willing to compromise. This also would mean that is Roman is to break my rules then I will have a conversation as to why but also provide a punishment to learn from. For example, with Roman one time I found a few beer cans in the car after Roman used it one night. There was a rule to have no drinking and driving, so Roman and I had a conservation about it and he was grounded from his car for a week. Roman also learned from this as the next time he was drinking he called me for a ride home instead. Children with authoritative parents tend to be independent, creative, self-assured, and socially skilled. Roman was all of these characteristics even if shy he knew how to communicate with people when needed. With this parenting style I am open to my son but also strict. By the time he was eighteen we had a very good relationship and could share many things such as, stories, political views, and religion views,

    There are three different types of parenting styles used by families, authoritarian, permissive and democratic. Authoritarian style is when the parents present themselves as absolute authority in all matters. Children do not argue with their parent’s decisions and they are taught respect for authority to instill strong moral character in them. The children aren’t allowed to speak their own opinion.     Unlike other parenting styles, authoritative parents have both demanding and responsive criterium (Alegre 2011, p. 57). Authoritative parenting style involves two theories: "behavior control" and “acceptance" (Steinberg et al. 1989, p. 1525).     Parent; when looking in a dictionary one may come across words such as, protector, guardian, father, mother, and one that creates offspring. Be that as it may, when kids think of parents they think up words such as overprotected, hoverer, or final say, these words would never appear in a dictionary. In most eastern cultures being the strict and embarrassing parent was expected, as my mother always says, “If you aren’t mad or embarrassed by me I am not doing my job right.” After all how would children learn to behave and know what’s right and wrong? This kind of parenting is adopted in most families worldwide, kids describe there parents, mostly mothers as “tiger mothers”. However, there is also the idea that allowing a child space, and letting them make there own choices is the best way to parents. By allowing them space, you are allowing them to shape who they are and teaching them to be independent. So the real question I want to uncover in this paper is what style is considered the best parenting style. The popular article that was in the New York Times called, “Raising Successful Children” chooses to oppose this popular opinion that being strict and controlling a child’s choice may not be the best parenting style. The article by no means is saying to ignore kids, or not to discipline them for something that they are doing which may be blatantly wrong, but that there is a difference how one can enforce good behavior and decision making. The example from the article is to have a parent insist on a child go to school to learn information for their benefit, not because they need there child to be a perfect student, but that the education they will receive will be benefit them later.
