Venus On Fire Essay
The piece I chose is Venus on Fire by Erika Verzutti. This artwork is a bronze sculpture made up of three different type of forms based on pumpkins and other vegetation. A small bumpy sphere that has been flattened on one side sits on the bottom under the center of the middle piece that resembles a kobocha squash. This middle piece over hangs the bottom one by a couple of inches. Placed on top center with is large side down, tapering up to a peak is a figure that resembles an indented soursop or pear fruit with a bite out of it. All of these pieces are very centered and balance, nothing is leaning or tilting.

Verzutti uses a lot of texture on these shapes. The top pear shaped one is covered in small bean shaped indents. While the middle one is mostly smooth with a few deep lines carved into it spaced a few inches apart. Finally the bottom piece is incredibly textured with raised bumps covering the entire thing. The use of bronze mixed with

It stands 55 1/8 inches tall by 24 6/8 inches by 24 6/8 inches. The piece “aims to distill the essential physical qualities of natural objects”. (“Gugenheim.”) She tries to capture the fantasy side of an object rather than its truthful side. This piece in particular is inspired by the Venus of Willendorf having the same purpose of symbolizing fertility. Verzutti was born in Sao Paulo in 1971. Her studies included industrial design at Universidade Presbiterana Machenzie in Sao Paulo, she later continued her post graduate studies at Goldsmiths College in London. Her works use are located somewhere between real and fantasy. Many of her pieces are based off of animals or vegetation. She also includes her happy accidents in her works, things such as scratches, breaks and stains. (“Gugenheim.”) In 2010 she worked with a group of Brazilian artists to create the sculpture Seven-Headed Monster this piece was considered to be part of Brazil’s modernism art

The sculptures' color is natural granodiorite. The detail level is high, which makes the sculpture appear more realistic. They have carved the details out and worked with them to make them as smooth as possible. It is detailed; you can see the female shapes in the breasts and in the hip area. When you go down to the detail level, especially the face and hands are prominent. The head is a lioness head and the eyes are small and intense. It is easily to spot that there is lionesses’ head, because of the high detail level. You can see all the shapes, from the ears to the mouth. When you the face on profile you can see that it looks very lifelike. Her hand also looks lifelike, together with her feet. The knees are prominent an easily noticeable through the clothes. The artist have made a sculpture that has several female attributes such as her sitting position, with a straight back and narrow shoulders. Whereas her hips are wider than they would have been on a man. Also her torso are seen as thinner than on an average…

The Articles written by Jean Young and Greg Miller both focus in what Suzan-Lori Parks intentions were when writing the play Venus. After reading both articles I am siding with Jean Young’s article, "The Re-Objectification and Re-Commodification or Saartjie Baartman in Suzan-Lori Parks's Venus" that Parks is re-objectifying Saartjie Baartman. Throughout this article it explains how Baartman is portrayed as a free women able to make her own decisions, but this is wrong because Baartman is actually a victim. This shows how the play continues to objectify Baartman. Later in the article Young states, “Parks's stage representation in Venus creates the illusion that Baartman was a free and liberated woman who enjoyed her status as a sex object and/or…

The painting depicts a man thrusting his spear into a monstrous spider. The man is naked surrounded in a pool of blood and red mist. Like many of Frazetta’s works the protagonist is very muscular and stern. He seems very hardened as if fighting is all he knows and it is a heavy burden upon…

This sculpture falls in the modern art category and the style is abstract expressionism. This sculpture is very large it is actually 110cm. The artist that created this sculpture was one of the many fine French Sculptors, he was one of the younger generation who started out as a Symbolist painter as well as a tapestry designer but he got an eye disease around the age of 40 and he had to give these things up but then found love for sculpting . This artist had a love for Greek sculpture but he rejected some of what it stood for. This piece of work symbolizes some sort of emotion from an older more mature female, she seems to be thinking about something going on in her life or maybe even crying out for help, the position that the woman is in ( elbow on the left leg which is raised, other hand touching the ground and head down) shows us that this woman is clearly trying to gain some sort of comfort.…

Archaeologist Josef Szombathy found a unique masterpiece in 1908, The Venus of Willendorf. Joesef found the sculpture near the town of Willendorf in Austria. The incredible sculpture must have been created somewhere else due to the fact that the Venus of Willendorf was created from a type of oolitic limestone that is not found in the region (L. C. E. Witcombe). The interesting sculpture’s characteristics are remarkable. The approximate measurement of the statuette is eleven centimeters in height and four centimeters in width. The masterpiece was created out of yellow limestone as well as tinted red by traces of ochre. When someone looks at the statuette, they see a short female as well as features you would see on a female, drooping breasts, a large belly, as well as a pronounced buttock. The sculpture…

When I first arrived at the Weatherspoon Art Museum on UNCG’s campus, I was in awe of the beautifully complex works displayed within it. There was a plethora of paintings, drawings, and sculptures, which not only captivated but enticed me with their unique beauty and grace. This made it quite difficult to pick just one work of art. However, as I passed through each exhibit and entered into Weatherspoon’s outside sculpture garden, I noticed one bronze sculpture in particular which held my attention and left a significant impression on me. This sculpture was Lunalilo by Deborah Butterfield.…

The artwork I chose for the Greeks is called the Hydria. This vase contains the artwork of Hercules and Athena. The vase art relates with Athena coming from Mount Olympus to bring Hercules to live among the other gods. In the myth it is hard to show who is who, because the Greeks see their gods as walking among humans. In the vase we can tell Athena by her armor, because she is the warrior goddess. We can see Hercules by the messenger god Hermes. We see the chariot and helpers, helping harness the horses for Athena and Hercules to ride to Mount Hercules. The vase reflects the story of how the Greeks view the gods and the heroes.…

The first piece of artwork I've decided to write about is "Falling Landscape IV" by Evon Streetman and was created in 1994. It was roughly the same height as me, and was nearly 4 feet wide. It was a large piece, which was wonderful for exaggerating the features and details. The medium used was cibachrome, which is a positive-to-positive process used to reproduce film transparencies on photographic paper. I think "Falling Landscape IV" was the most beautiful piece in the entire museum, and I enjoyed looking at each detail within it.…

The very top of the vessel has vertical lines that create texture. The neck of the vase looks like it has a smooth texture. When you reach the band, the texture becomes rough again because the figures are carved into the piece. Then the bottom, which was reattached when the original piece became missing, has smooth texture that matches the neck of the vase.…

    Lot's Daughters

The artwork I selected is Lot & Daughters by Orazio Gentileschi. The piece is on display at the Getty Museum and was painted in 1622. This piece is a dynamic, wonderful example of the baroque style. Gentileschi’s strong use of chiaroscuro makes the painting seem to be a living scene being viewed from the other side of a window. His use of the three primary colors for the three subjects clearly defines each of them; while still creating color harmony. The subject matter is the story of the city of Sodom from the book of Genesis. Lot and his family are saved by God as He destroys the evil inhabitants of Sodom. Lot’s wife is turned to a pillar of salt when she turns back to the city, leaving only Lot and the girls as survivors. Having no faith that their lineage will continue, Lot’s daughters get him to drink wine (as the flask and goblet on the left side of the painting elude to) and each lie with him in order to get pregnant. They each have a son and the lineage continues even to include David and Jesus.…

The most important scene in Venus by Suzan-Lori Parks is scene 22. In this scene Saartjie Baartman, also known as the Venus Hottentot, requests new demands to her Mother-Showman. So far up until this point the Venus Hottentot has been a hit everywhere she goes. People that come to the Mother-Showman’s show often come just to see her and this is when Venus finally realizes this. Venus’s demands are all reasonable and because she is the Mother-Showman’s main source of income she should receive them, but Venus is not an employee as she thinks she is. Venus is actually property to the Mother-Showman and honestly doesn’t even know it. She’s been tricked into thinking that after two years of performing she’ll be rich and famous and able to return home a celebrity. In this scene you finally see and grasp how harsh she is actually being treated.…
