Venice Italy is most widely known for its Canals, but what most people forget about are the renaissance artwork on the side of the canals or the Carnival held near the Canals among other things. Venice has been the center of attention for a long time and some of those events are in this document. The Carnival of Venice is yearly occurrences were people are allowed to wear a mask and cloak. Three day before the Carnival Venetians start to dance around the city. The Flight of the Angels is where people in Venice perform dangerous acrobatic acts during the Carnival. The Carnivals don’t just set up by itself, Masquerades are groups of people who set up the Carnival and wear multicolored cloths. Mask makers are people who paint multicolored faces onto pieces of plaster. Sea Gates are used to stop the flooding of Venice. The one hundred years the wooden crates that Venice is built on has started sinking in the mud from the tides. Venice has high flood walls but because it is sinking more and more floods re going over the walls and destroying property. You wouldn’t think mud is the reason for the sinking of Venice but every time a flood comes through, the wooden crates sink father in the mud. In Venice Jews were kept separate in an area called the Ghetto so they couldn’t convert Christians. To Identify the Jews the Venice Government made all Jews were a yellow armband or hat. The Jewish doctors were given special permission to leave the Ghetto after hours; if they were thought trustworthy enough they were allowed to live in the city. There are a few reasons that the Jews are kept separate but the main one is because the government was worried that the Jews would convert Christians. In the Ghetto was not the most spacious place, so when there was a mass of Jews Venice had to build a whole new area just to house them all. All though Venice didn’t let the Jews live in the city they did let them build Synagogues, so the

During the plague it seems as though there were many rumors flying around that the Jews are the blame! Many claimed the Jews have poisoned the springs and the wells. As numerous people passed and the rumors spread about the Jews, the Town Council of Cologne sent many letters to all the cities and towns as well as investigated on the rumors towards the Jews. The Council stated as long as the Jews remain innocent they should not be disturbed or harmed in anyway. They forbid any type of harassment of the Jews, and decided to accept them and keep them safe. This is interesting seeing the Jews were never quite treated well from what we have learned so far about the Jews in medieval Europe. The Jews lived in certain spaces and wore distinctive clothing. Some were wealthy some were not but they did not have total freedom. By the Town Council of Cologne saying they will defend them faithfully as well we protect them is very…

In a 15th century engraving (Document 1), the picture depicts the Jews being singled out by having to wear a special hat to distinguish them. The law was probably made because of the sheer amount of the Jews in Frankfurt, Germany. They didn’t want to have them take over. In a painting of a Jewish coupe from Worms Germany (Document 7), the couple is not only depicted as greedy, but a huge circle was sewn on the front of their clothes. This happened because the Christians of Worms wanted to mark the Jews to differentiate from them. In a papal bull of Pope Paul IV (Document 9), the pope says to make the Jews live in a different part of town and they have to wear a hat or obvious marking so they cannot be concealed or hidden. The author said this because he was the leader of Catholics, which were Christians. He wanted to oppress the Jews and make sure that none of the Christians converted. In a contemporary etching by Georg Keller (Document 11), the artwork depicts the expulsion of the Jews from Frankfurt, Germany. This document shows yet another example of the harsh treatment of the Jews. Singling out and isolating the Jew was a common treatment of the Jews in this time…

Between 1637 and 1678, in nine different theaters, Venetian audiences saw more than 150 operas. The creation of public opera houses sparked the interest of the people of the time because of social and philosophical changes that were happening in the Republican state of Venice. Opera was not only interesting to the elite. It had now made its way to a public audience. The primary audience was the crowd of Venetians and tourists that came for the carnival season in Venice. Opera succeeded as a public art form for many reasons: because of its exquisite musicality, it was highly successful and it became a way to produce revenue. Ellen Rosand says that three conditions existed for opera to be a permanent establishment in the Venetian culture: there was regular demand during the carnival season, dependable financial backing, and a broad predictable audience. An important group involved with the financial backing and librettos written for the opera houses were the Accademia degli Incogniti, translating to “The Academy of Unknowns”.…

The Roman Empire was like a house of cards. With one blow, the whole structure fell, and it was impossible to rebuild it to be exactly the way it was before. Rome was powerful, grew fast and furious, and needed to be divided into two empires, the Western and the Eastern. Neither of the two could hold as much success that Rome originally had, and eventually, they both went crashing down. A big reason it crashed was because of their different economies. There are many places and countries, specifically the United States, that is destined to the same fate as the Roman Empire because our economy, similar to theirs, has two cultures. Military and civilian.…

Geographically, Italy is comprised of a peninsula that extends into the Mediterranean Sea, as well as two large islands. The shape of Italy has been depicted as a ‘boot’ in many cartoons and drawings for years. The country covers over 116,000 square miles, making it approximately the combined size of Florida and Georgia. (Killinger, 2002) Italy is a democratic republic that has a current population of around 60 million people, making it the twenty-third most populous country in the world. Italy is a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the ‘Group of Six’, which later became the G8, and the European Union. ("Italy," 2010) Italians are primarily Roman Catholic and are required to have fourteen years of formal education. This has lead to a 98 percent literacy rate among the population that only has a growth rate of 0.02 percent per year, which is one of the lowest growth rates in the world. (Killinger, 2002)…

    The Word "Ghetto"

The word ghetto, which would come to be used throughout Europe to describe communities of isolated minority groups, originated in Venice in the 1500’s. According to the Oxford English Dictionary a ghetto was “The quarter in a city, chiefly in Italy, to which the Jews were restricted” (OED). In 16th century Italy, Pope Paul IV established ghettos in Venice as a place of confinement for Jews. His main goal was to gain maximum economic advantage from the Jews’ presence while ensuring minimal social contact with Jewish people. In 1516, seven hundred Jews were forced to move to one small part of Venice, then an abandoned site of a 14th-century foundry that produced cannons. This area known as the “Geto” was an old Venetian dialect for "foundry" from the Italian verb gettare which means to pour or to cast, while the island across from it on which waste products had been dumped became known as “Il terrneo del Ghetto.” The word ghetto in its new usage did not remain long confined to the city of Venice. Generalization of the term helped the word to include all enclosed quarters of Jews in Europe. By the Pope’s edict, Jews remained enclosed in ghettos for two centuries until 1797, when Napoleon and the French army invaded Italy. At that time the ghettos were disbanded and the Jewish people who lived in them were allowed to go wherever they pleased…
