Vark Learning Style Reflection Paper
By taking the VARK Learning Style Questionnaire and the Teacher Perspective Inventory (TPI) I have once again been reassured that you can always benefit from being assessed. From these assessments I have found both my areas of strength and my areas of weakness. With this information I can prepare my lesson plans to focus on my strengths and at the same time add in the areas that I need to improve on. An effective classroom teacher builds off their strengths and address their weaknesses. My results of the VARK Learning Style Questionnaire showed that I am primarily a kinesthetic with a score of 13, average in visual (7) and aural (6), with an extremely low score of 1 in reading and writing. For example, since I am a hands-on learner, the odds of my lesson being in the form of a lecture are low. If I do not learn well from that setting most likely I am not going to expect my students to learn from that setting. As a future educator, I hope to fill my classroom with an abundance of hands-on activities that students will be able to apply to real life situations. One challenge that I can take from my VARK results is incorporating more reading and writing into my lessons. A lot of people have an average or a high score in reading and writing, therefore it would benefit my students to incorporate this particular learning style even though it is not a strong point for me. My Teacher Perspective Inventory (TPI) assessed my teaching style rather than my individual learning style. My results showed that I was dominant in nurturing (41), average in apprenticeship (39), development (37), and transmission (35), and recessive in social reform (32). By analyzing my results I know that my dominant score in nurturing means that my students will feel comfortable giving their best effort and that I support them in their learning.     Fleming developed an inventory designed to help students learn more about their individual learning preferences. Fleming’s VAK model identified three learning styles; Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic. According to this theory most people have a preferred learning style however some people may prefer to learn using a mixture of all three styles.     This total score as well as the answers provided make him a multi-modal learner. According to Fleming, a multi modal learner can be divided into various categories based on the total number of questions answered. Answers greater than 30 tend to have a whole sense learning preference. This learning strategy uses all four modes “in combination, to make decisions, to learn and to present materials to others” (Fleming, 2011). With a total of 24 the author’s score is indicative of the other form of multi-modal learning which is context specific approach. A person who learns from a context specific approach will find the best learning strategy for a particular subject.     I think I do better acting out how things work while I am studying or doing homework. The assessment did surprise me a little bit because I was not expecting to score high with visual, aural, and read/write. I’m also surprised that I scored Kinesthetic by a point above of visual, aural, and read/write. There are some points where I could have been a visual, aural, and read/write learner. I would like to use visual because at times when I use a graph to look at different percentages that are about many different things, it helps to look at what item is better by the percentage. Aural would help be by listening to what others say about a topic and how they feel about it.
