Agent: Variola major, Variola minor
Types: Ordinary, Modified, Malignant, Hemorrhagic
Symptoms:
• Early Stage: Fever, muscle pains, malaise, headache, prostration, nausea and vomiting
• Late Stage: Red spots appear on mucous membranes around the mouth, constantly erupting and releasing virus to saliva. After 24-48 hours, a rash develops on the forehead, then rapidly spreads to the rest of the body
Method of Transmission: Through inhalation of the variola virus which is excreted from an infected person, or from direct contact (clothing, skin)
Treatment: Vaccination in under a week after being infected can lessen the severity, other than this, treatment is primarily supportive, such as wound care, fluid therapy, infection control
